Anyone here have a milemarker winch?
What are the disadvantages besides these:
1) slow
2) can't use when vehicle isn't running (not that an electric would last long anyways)
Good thing I heard is they're submergable.
opinions?

don't buy one without getting a firsthand look at one. Everyone knows they're slow, but you can't imagine how slow until you actually see the thing. I know quite a few people that either bought them and went back to electric or were gonna buy one until they saw it. They're SLOW!!!!!!!! That being said, if you're planning on spending lots of time in the water it's the only way to go i suppose.

I have a friend with one and yeah, it's really slow. I just like the fact that I won't have to upgrade my electrical system and can get a 10.5000 or 12,000lbs winch for under 1000. I'm not one of those people who will use my winch all day long, but also don't want to be without one for emergencies. Most of the time it's still quicker and easier to get a tug from a friend than it would be to hook up a quicker warn winch.

The winch may be waterproof, but what about your engine? Get a used 8274 and a battery isolator and have the best.

An electric winch will run for a long time on 2 batteries alone.

Would a warn 8724 be enough to pull a fullsize on 40's? I was under impressions that this was a great winch for jeep-sized vehicles but not enough for a fullsize.
I gotta wonder, if the 8274 was so fawkin great why Warn went ahead and built all them other sizes?

Wreckers also use hydraulic winches.
If you've seen / used one in action, then you know the speed. That's about the only down side. The up side is that you wont burn it out any time soon. Also depends on use.
I use on on a d90, but mainly run forests and muddy stuff. We get some LONG bog holes to winch through, that can involve the first pull requiring the full lenght of the winch cable, + a winch extension. That sure takes a long time with a milemarker, but I've seen just about every other winching setup fail on long tough pulls like that. Might not be the winch, but the alternator packs up, batteries flat, wires heat up, solenoids fair (or weld themselves ON - that's fun!). The Milemarker is the cheapest setup that will run all day every day. We've only 1 electric setup vehicle that will do that, but it's got 2 optimas, 120 amp Alternator, welding cables all over the fkn place for wiring the winch, and a 12,000 goodwinch (Tuned up superwinch). Lot of $.
If your only using it for short pulls, and infrequently, most electric winches would be fine.

I watched a dump truck sized wrecker drag itself about 15ft across a dry dirt road before it dug in and extricated a seriously burried F150 on 35's. The guy said it was rated at 8000LB...probably a PTO winch, but I was damn impressed.

One way to help speed up the milemarker is to install a high flow, high pressure pump. And with big tires/big truck, it could use the help anyways. Make sure that there is a cooler installed, and even possibally a filter.

I was extracted by a milemarker equipped CJ once. No where in front of me for my X9 to pull to. That was *the slowest* thing in the world:
It was an "I'd be worried about over-running the cable at 200:1" kind of slow. Get an 8274 or an HS9500. Either of these will keep up with a stock Toy or CJ in first-low easily. Less worry about wrapping the winch cable around a tire/axletube because you drove over it.
If I get another winch, it will be an HS9500. If I can fit it on the rig, it will be an 8274.
