Anyone here have any opinions on towing using a for 9" rear axle. It woul actually be in the rear of a suburban that I am building, and qwill be towing a 16' trailer with a jeep wrangler on it.

you,ll have no problem, a fat ring gear which is more than most and even the one ton ford trucks come with a 31 spline inner axles(which i have)and i,m sure you at least that

a stock ford 9 inch is a half ton axle, just like a 10 bolt,12 bolt,8.8,dana 44,or any other rear half ton axle. would you tow with one of them?

youll have to spend a bunch of $$ on a ford 9" to make it qualified to pull 5000+ lbs of trailer. to me its not logical. a SRW 14 bolt will bolt into your burb,is easily converted to discs, and can even be converted to 5 or 6 lugs,if thats for some reason important,in your tow rig. 14 bolts are picked up anywhere from free to $200,and you wont come close to building a 9" for that.

you cant beat the "beef per $$ spent" ratio of the GM 14 bolt.

for various reasons the 9" has its place with the street rod crowd, leave it there.it is far from the ideal truck axle,IMO,for towing or to take the abuse of big tires off road.

How many beat to piss farm trucks out there are still run 9" doing heavy work every day? Believe it or not a new 1/2 ton chevy with a 10 bolt is probably rated to 7k+. You'll be fine, remember you are towing with a 1/2 ton and it will be fine towing a jeep/ trailer. A 14 bolt would be a better option but I wouldn't hesatate to hook up a trailer to a 9" or 10 bolt rear.

That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Yes, it's a half-ton axle. It's also stronger than any other axle you listed. It'll be fine, especally if it's a 31 spline. a 14 bolt is stronger, but if you have a 9" ready to go, I would run it.

is it? the 9 inches design makes it want to spit the carrier out of the housing, and tends to make stock centers come apart in many small pieces. upgrade to a nodular center and maybe it will just puke out the whole thing.

i regularly tow 7000+ lbs of trailer and grand wagoneer with my 1/2 ton suburban. the guy before me used it for hie carpet/tile business,so it got quite a workout there also. the original owner used it to pull an airstream. all this abuse and ive got 270,000 miles on the original C clip 10 bolt.

does that mean its a good idea? not really. but at any rate the 10 bolt has similar sided shafts and a beefy R&P,and it doesnt try to spit out its center :flipoff2:

but if you have a 9" ready to go, I would run it.

my whole point is if youre gonna do a swap, make it to something better. and a stock 9" is not better than any other stock 1/2 ton axle.

if youre starting with an f150 and the 9" is allready there, fine, tow away. but dont waste your time building a 9" and swapping it into a suburban. 14 bolt can be had for way less $$ than building the 9" and youll have actually made it stronger :flipoff2:

last and not least:
That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard.

naw,not really. the ford 9 inch is prolly the most over-rated axle in the history of axles. i forgive you since the mags and websites have been pounding it into your head for many years how great they are :grinpimp: like i said, leave them for the street rod guys

When I towed with my 1/2 ton, I had no issues with it, nor does anyone else I know that runs them. strong ring and pinion design, strong housing, 4 pinion carrier like the big axles run, and a bery nice oiling system. It's by far the BEST 1/2 ton rearend out there(aside from the sterling 9.75" in IFS fords) but it is STILL a 1/2 ton rearend
