What's-Up I was reading some post on other forums and over and over on those forums people continued to suggest to me to come here to learn and read! read! read! read to begin with.

So I decided I would show-up and see whats happening!

I am here to learn.

I have a new project truck (as listed below in signature) That I would to build a forest/jungle/woods/creeks/mud crawler. There are not many rocks etc... here to crawl over and this area is bascially all woods, mud etc...so I figured that is what I would build so anytime I want to go off-road around here I can.

But like all of the forums I have read in other places information is the key. So that is why I am here.

I have some basic mechanics (fixing things as they broke when my Dad told me what to do ,years ago), Autobody Repair took at school, worked at a body shop called Maaco and then restoring trucks for a meat packing company called Farm Boy Meats locally which was their delivery trucks. Suspension,Chassis, etc... Don't have a clue but I will learn, welding I know alittle like brazing body areas on trucks but not good strong welding....I am looking now to take some basic welding classes but have a welder who is interested in trading paintball equipment for welding work since I own a paintball store.

No electronics at all....but that will be a very hard bad area for me.

So that is the basics....Hope to talk to alot of you in time and learn as much as possible and post pictures as I go.

Oops almost forgot I work part-time at a Comic Book,Gaming store too.

Have a good one, talk to some of you soon.

Okay first question;
I have truck down to chassis so for the kind of off-road I am wanting to do,best protection and longlasting what is the best way you feel to "paint","treat","powercoat" etc... it or any other suggestion?

How do you compare the FabTech lift suppsenion kit to others? I am open to suggestion and opinions.....

I am putting a 12 point Roll Cage on it from JEGS does anyone have a better suggestion on companies besides them?

These are the tires I am looking to put on them 39' -SSR Series Super Swamper Radial/TSL" the ratings are very good across the board on all terrian but very high on the terrain I would be driving on. I have 38' Super Swampers on my 75 and they are awesome never been stuck or even slowed down and have handled everything. Opinions please....

Thanks for any replies

I've got 4" Tuff Country springs on mine, and have been happy with them. You might want to post future tire and suspension brand questions in the newbie section. Some people have been known to become agitated with these type of questions here. Just giving you the heads up.

Some how here it seems that newbies are somehow related to young and stupid, which I an neither and it also seems like it is more if someone is in the "click" then it is okay to post here, which seems alittle odd since it is called "Chevy Talk". I understood Paul's "newbie" post which I read but it is beginning to read like everyone who joins Pirates4x4 has to be Dennis from Grave Digger or something or Jeff Gordon's pit-crew.... Please!!

New members or old members it shouldn't discriminate just because someone just joined this forum out of the 100's out there on the internet and try to separate them over how long they have been a member or how many post they make.

Now did I ask what was the velocity of air that passes through a cooling system as you reach 42 mph jumping your 2001 Chevy Silverado over a 5 ft and 10 inch ramp..... No!

I just ask for opinions on FabTech lifts but as I have read on this forum in many post some of the builders here don't use lifts they prefer other opinions that are available which is what I would like to hear about to get these experienced builders imput about it. Not a high-tech super hard to figure out question but a more meat and potatoes give me your veiwpoint on this questions and parts questions.
One of the other questions was how other seasoned buildered treated thier chassis again not the comfiguration of a jet engine dive bombing some pigeons over a 100 ft creek but a question the maybe other builders would have liked to get 2nd opinions on,instead of hanging-out in the newbie section where it is clear all of the so-called experts here want everyone else to go who just signs-up on this forum.....
The some tire questions, I know how I feel about my SS 38's but thought maybe someone out in this forum might have bought a set of the others I was asking about and would have liked to give thier opinion on them but after seeing all of the post telling everyone who is new to scram and go to newbie area.might have felt they might be outcast or called newbies to for helping,so didn't or didn't get a chance to response because of the other junk posted on this thread.

Not trying to be a dick or ass here but also don't feel some of the members give anyone who just joined this forum a fair chance either.

Now what I didn't see was "Paul" taking my post and moving it as stated in the "newbie read post" which he has every right to do or take it off which he also has the same right to do and it seems he is the ONLY one who can and really should address the issue of newbies and who belongs where, not the members who themselves one day was a newbie to this forum...

So go ahead give me hell and say all the sh*t you want but I am 46 years old and this forum is for all of us not like the veterans...so..:flipoff2:

Anyway if anyone who care to respond or private me with your opinions or experience on my questions would be great.
Thanks

The best way to survive pirates is to Search and research before asking questions, post in the proper thread catagories and not provoke flaming.

search FabTech, there are 200 threads on pirate4x4 that mention it.

buy a redstar,($20) gives you more access. there is more info on this site on any subject than you will have time to read, the key is to learn how to search and access it. if you have truely searched without success then your question asked is well recieved because it isnt a worn-out subject.

FabTech makes some good stuff, but 70's chevs require less complicated suspensions, I would aim towards a sky jacker-softride suspension. springs and brakelines, maybe some anti-wrap device. depends on vehicle use.

Ive got 38.5x14.5x15 swamper tsl-sx's on my Jeep, and I like them, good traction, tough sidewall. there are tons of tire comparisons on here though.

frame painting- some on here will try and pimp different frame coatings. I have tried them all without longterm luck. just clean up the frame good(key) and prime and paint with rustoleum. its cheap and holds up as long as anything, keep it clean and repaint every couple of years. thats all.

You need to take rockreligious advise and buy a red star. Then SEARCH. When I lurked, then joined search was free. That is why my post count is so low. I'm not building a super high tech rockcrawler, just a good'ole truck to trail ride with and have fun. I can tell you from experince(sp?) that you will save yourself a lot of money by reading and searching on pirate. You can bet your ass that if/when I take my truck to the next level (4-links and such) that I won't think twice about the $20 for membership and search like crazy to find the info I need.

To answer one question I have some experince with powder coating in a industail(sp?) setting and imho it's not worth the time or money.

Dude, I seriously wasn't trying to be an ass, and I'm certainly not a member of any "click" on here. I was honestly just trying to let you know how some people react to these particular types of questions in this forum because you seem like a nice guy, and a lot of these guys just don't give a sh!t. I don't think anyone would consider my comments "flaming you" (at least not by PBB standards). I was only trying to give some honest advice to somebody who doesn't have much experience on this site. Do with it as you will.

and newbie isnt a bad thing, dont let it bother you. we were all newbies once. your friends on the other sites should have warned you before throwing you to the lions, luckly for you they were all sleeping today.

you will be fine, just take it slow and get familiar with the search option.

**positrack@earthlink _ I apologize I was not really addressing you but more the masses since it seems like on almost every thread I read there was this overwhelming attack on people who just joined. None of them were based on any knowledge or experience a person might have had but just that they were new and get-off this thread....which is stupid because people are here to learn and some people like myself read alot and ask alot so I try to get the best of both, because in asking is getting ideals and information that gives you directions to take to read. A person can read on here for months and still not get the information they need. They can get information about products and repeated question with alot of basic answers but not really conversation and experience. That is why I read alot and then ask questions (which has no bearing on time frame I joined this forum) and in asking questions and getting good response" like you, "jtl_77 " and " "rockreligious" gave it helps and sending me and others like in me a direction we might not have learning in reading months and months.... I thank you for your information and suggestions and hope we can continue to talk in the future.

**rockreligious -Thanks for your opinions, they were very helpful. This is what I am talking about just guys (or girls) who read and know or have experience with someones question and would like to expand on it. So what did "redstar" actually give you that was so different from what a member has? In one response to your comments my project truck will be used for off-road fun through mud, trails, woods, dirt and some snow during winter, not to much rock crawling or sand stuff. Again thanks.

**jtl_77 -Thanks for responding on your comment "just a good'ole truck to trail ride with and have fun" is exactly what this project truck is for, to build and take my kids out to get muddy, dirty and have some woods fun. Thanks for taking the time to respond and show respect it is easy not to sometimes when it is on the internet and not in person.

Thanks to all of you who responded and shared information with me,I hope there are more off-road builders out there who would like to do the same. You have already gave me some directions to take and read and I hope others will too.

Thanks:cool2:

with the redstar you will have a search option on your tools header that you can click on, works like google but within the perimiters of pirate4x4. you didnt used to have a redstar, but this site has grown too big.

you get

1-"search"

2-discounts with vendors

3-chance at raffles from vendors each week.

4-chance to help support pirate4x4.

5- avatar and pix options

6-twice as much room in your pm box.

Im sure theres more but I have found the discounts and research to be way more valuable for the $20.

pauls link to topic of the day could be usefull also.

Start with http://www.offroaddesign.com/ they specialize in GM solid axle stuff.

FabTech sucks for flexy springs, for the least expensive spring with some flex use Tuff Country EZ Rides from ORD.

Living in AZ, Ive never painted a frame so I cant be of any help there.

No clue on pre fabbed cages.

SSR's suck, use bias TSL's, prolly SX's for your terrain. If you drive on the highway alot use radial TSL's.

Welcome :D

**bigyellowjimmy -Thanks! Already went to offroaddeisgn, learning already....Thanks! Got some ideals on my next direction just in the few post and responses I have gotten. Thanks Everyone!

I have read so much the last few weeks my eyes are shot (bloodshot too)...can't focus....

BYJ -I won't be doing any street driving ,this truck is going to be just off-road. I have my other beast for all other driving.

The "Bolt-In Steering Box Brace Kit and Weld in Frame Repair Kit" I know I am already going to need so it is next along with completeing chassis....

I'm caught between ordering the 12-point roll cage or having local welder make me one....he is a cool dude and has done many roll-cages for Tri-State Speedway,Booneville raceway and other areas and drivers and I know he will custom design and make it for me at $50/$60 a hour or barter for paintball equipment (since I owe a paintball store) but I am thinking to save cost get the 12-point cage and then let him add any needed areas to save time and possible money....

Anyway! Thanks and hope to hear from more of you.

You annoy me. Take your shifter out of your truck and beat yourself in the testicles with it so that you will never have offspring. Then beat yourself in the head with it so no one else has to deal with your gayness.

Just wanted to second ORD. I've ordered a fair bit of stuff from them, and I've never been disappointed. Absolutely top quality stuff, friendly, knowledgeable people to deal with, and fantastic packaging. When I ordered my 205 twin-stick, Stephen Watson (one of the owners) personally took my order since it was kind of a different application, and he wanted to make sure I got the right set-up. He was a hell of a nice guy on the phone, and he didn't know me from Adam. I was also particularly impressed with their crossover steering set-up. It's very well designed and beautifully made (and I'm damn picky). I'm not involved with them in any way, but when you find a vendor that actually delivers what you're paying good money to get, you gotta give 'em props.

Thanks and I will check them out and talk to them. I know what you mean about companies that work. As a owner of a paintball store whenever I find a good wholesaler who has good Sales reps that take care of me I use them all the time and order from them every week, even when I don't need something just to keep business good.

Thanks for info

With this type of question you will probubly get better answers over @ colorodoK5. Most of the guys who have been around for a while are getting kinda pissy about the lack of good tech in the chevy area...and I don't blame them...this is a hardcore website after all.

I'm not sure exaclty what you are asking but for general trail work I have never been impressed with anything fabtec makes. Some of their stuff is neat and would probubly work on high speed deasert work. You will be much better off with a custom set of leaf springs or just going coilovers. I still run leaf springs but have been thru countless stock combinations and aftermarket bolt on types. What is working for me is a set of 3" all pro rear springs and 3" wide ford 57" springs in front.

Rob,Thanks for your advise. I have read here many times the same thing you said and to get away from lift kits,so that does look like the direction I will go. Thanks for your response.

I am still curious about other opinions on "roll cages" set-ups....

I have another questions,could I get some opinions on these seats;
Hunsaker Synkro Reclinable Racing Seats and 2 Adjustable Slider Sets,these seats features are;

5-point harness slots
Durable Carbon Fiber wear patches
Breathable Nylon Weave Material
15 position Reclining Mechanism
Superior "SS4" Full Suspension System
Strong "DLS" Dual Locking Sliders
1 1/4 Tubular Steel Frame
Memory Foam

Thanks ahead of time for any replies
