Looking to replace my failing 5 horse motor on my compressor. Its a typical 5 horse for my 60 gallon unit.
Any tips would be great.
Thanks in advance.

This is the one I bought (note that it is a real 5hp motor). I paid $223, the price has come down a little. Many of the 60 gallon 5hp compressors are actually only 3hp.

Tractor supply company has pretty good prices on GE electric motors. I paid $160 for my 5 hp on my compressor. If you want uber cheap, check out harbor freight.

Any electric motor companies in your area? Sometimes they have smaller motors sitting on the shelf or know where you could get the best quality for the money.

I just paid $80 for a 3 HP one at HF (previously listed as 5 HP). I believe the 5 HP was $99. I mounted it on my 25 or so year old Crafsman 20 gal. today. I still need to wire it up to 220v.

I bought one from this guy on ebay (http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZtpmcleanQQhtZ-1). He was quick to ship, and the price was a lot better than I could have done anywhere locally.

Your "5hp" motor is probably only 2.5 or 3hp as others have stated. A 5hp motor will need a starter.

There are a lot of places that recycled equipment. Here in Sac there is a government auction wherehouse. Look around, there are many things you can scavenge a motor off of.

Unless you want new. No telling how long a HF one will last. The do have the ESP so if it goes before the plan expires you can get a new one.
