I've got the DD model 150 (I think... it's not the smallest one they sell, it's the next step up) and it works awesome upto 1/2". A while back, I picked up the chuck to do 1/2" to 3/4" bits. I tried and tried and tried to sharpen an 11/16" bit and it just won't come out. The angle is all off on the cutting edge such that the bit will not cut at all.... it just spins in the pilot hole.

Anyone else have this problem with bigger bits? Any tips?

yeah, the little drill doctors wont sharpen the big bits, even with the big chuck.

The manual and the literature that comes with it says it will.

I sharpen 5/8" without problems, never tried anything bigger. Ours is the larger model.

I've sharpened 5/8 with mine with no problem. Did notice that you have to keep a fairly good downward pressure to get the correct angle on the bit though.

Anyone have any luck with the split point option? Mine just completely ruins the bit when I try it. It seems the grinding wheel and where the chuck mounts is not lined up correctly to make the split point. Grindes too much of the bit and ruins it.

I have the 750. I think 5/8" is as big as I have gone so far. It worked just fine. It was a very good investment. It is nice to be able to sharpen odd stuff that you can't just get at home depot (like my dads 8mm bit that is longer then normal jobber length), when it is late at night, or just to save money over time on bits.

I have given up on splitting the points except on small drills. I have the 750 at home. The plant where I work makes the diamond wheels. Still made in the USA!!!!!!!

I have the 750 as well, are you sure that the instruction manual you have isn't for both models. I have sharpened up to 3/4 inch bit on mine with no trouble. When I researched these before I bought my second one (I had a 150) every thing I found said the 750 was the only one that would go bigger than 1/2 inch. Anyhow, with the bigger bits, it uses both halves of the grinding wheel instead of just the lower half for smaller than 1/2 bits. It is possible that if your model is capable of going larger than 1/2 inch, that the wheel is unevenly worn causeing it to cut odd on larger than 1/2 inch bits...

I've got a 500, it works flawlessly. Split points for all my bits now!

It's all in the setup, and how you chuck your bits, if you want them to come out properly. You've also got to get the rhythm down for making the split point work right

It takes practice. I started with a bucket full of dull bits. I buggered up a couple and then they started coming out better and better. By the end of the evening, I had a whole pile of really sharp bits!

I give mine :flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2:

I too have the 500 model, and it works flawlessly.

I DID have to actually sit down and read the instructions before using it, but once I understood the proper order of the steps, it does it all -- LOVE those split points!

As I understand it, the only real difference between the 500 and the 750 is the extra chuck that comes along for the larger bits -- is this correct?

BTW, I'm one of those guys that can also sharpen a bit really well by hand on a grinding wheel. I'm old school as far as hand-machine work is concerned... but I'll take the DDr. anytime. It is faster and cleaner.
