This has probably been covered before but i cant find any searching, Ok, my problem.. 1997 12 valve cummins ,auto trans, with 266K miles on the motor. Havet had it do it to me when the motor is cold, only warm, i crank it over then it starts up and idles up to 1100 rpm then dies, sometimes i can give it a little throttle and then it starts right up on the second try, but sometimes wont start at all. ill wait a few minutes then it will start. Anyone know what the problem is here? Thanks, Kodi

Check your fuel shut-down solenoid. It is located on the driver side of your engine right behind the injection pump lines. It is an electric solenoid that kills the fuel to your engine in order to shut it down. If it is in the up position then the fuel is on and down is off. Have someone crank your truck over and make sure the bottom of the solenoid is pulling the lever all the way up. Jeremy

Or when it starts and then stalls leave the key on and go out and see if the lever is all the way up. The solenoid is a cylinder shape about 2" in diameter and the end with the wires coming out is facing up slightly tilted. Look underneath for the link and lever that it pulls up to allow the fuel to flow. The solenoid has 2 coils: one pulls the lever up and draws enough amps that it needs a relay (energizes when the key is in crank position), the other holds the lever in the up position and draws low amps (energized in "on" position). So the lever is only pulled up in the crank position; if you turn the key on and then pull the lever up by hand it should stay up if it is working correctly.

If the solenoid is all the way up when the engine stalls then you could be getting air in the fuel system. Let us know how it tests.

Very good description of the solenoid. If the solenoid is bad call me before you spend too much money locally. If the solenoid is working properly and you need more help trouble shooting you can call as well. Jeremy (936) 348-8968

Also consider your fuel lines may be deteriorating at the engine and letting in air.

Espescially with the new ULSD.
