I happy as all hell that we have this new section. This is just the thing I needed. I seem to be liking the whole desert race scene a lot more the more I learn about it.
I also think us rockcrawlers can learn alot from the desert guys. Just take a look at the fab they do of their trucks. Years ahead of where rockcrawling is right now IMO.
Check these pics out for example from http://www.desertrides.com/

Walker Evans has been rock crawling for about 5 years now. John Nelson revolutionized competitive rock crawling when he built "Tiny" way back in 2002. Then he built Scrapper. Then Gieser Bros helped refine Scrapper. The top desert fab guys definitely have some great ideas for rock crawling, and especially for dual purpose rigs that do everything.

There's plenty of us here, but the smart ones lay low to avoid the PBB wrath. Thanks for officially inviting us, Lance! You'd better be bringing that Jeepspeed out to the VORRA races at PC!!! Having raced against them in BITD, they're a lot cooler/faster than I ever would have guessed.

I love the new section myself! I am dying to either turn my 88 toy pickup into a prerunner for go fast desert stuff, or buy an XJ for jeepspeed. the 1st is probably what will happen, but thanks go to Lance for this section.

building a jeepspeed now and eventually want to do something to my '82 yota, funny how all the yota SA swaps have been going on and soon I will be doing the opposite conversion, although it will all be home built and 2wd for simplicity(I'm thinking). Hope to see you all out there, I actually scored most of my JS parts from here, the full floater 35spline 9" from the classifieds, and most of my SAW shock parts from PIG(poly performance), really cool to finally have a desert section on here! thanks Lance and see you at the JS races soon.

Hey this new desert section should turn out to be a great addition to Pirate 4x4! Billy M. we slept in and got to the track late since we could not race... guess they moved you guys up and we missed you racing again. I'm assuming you have some in car footage? We just got back from Chula Vista Tuesday after the awards ceremony where I am crew chief/spotter for my buddies Pro 2 truck. Look forward to this new section!

I'm using a rock crawling chassis. but Im building my truck for sand and dezert. I used to work at currie enterprises. My family is from a race-car background of indie and baja. My cousin Johnnie has been racing dezert buggies for years in mostly the mexican ran races that are less known, but also the score races in nevada, and of course the baja. I raced a complete leg of the 1000 with him when I was a kid and it was bitchen.
Pics of my truck as its getting ripped apart and of my chassis waitin to get welded on.

Im 4 linking the rear with a reverse triangulation setup. The front Im going to run some alcans and do a steering crossover until I gather all the parts for the parallel 4 link with panhard in the front. The rear setup is using johnny joints and 4" TJ coils springs with 14" fox or bilstein resies. Most of my material with the exception of the shocks and tubing were donated to me by john currie. I guess if you can consider them my sponsor all though I dont plan on competing in anything I will greatfully sport their logo on my rig though. I spend a lot of time riding the dunes and dezert and go to most of the major holidays so they will get plenty of publicity once its done.

This forum is great! Members of race-dezert and desertrangers often post links to articles and threads here on pirate. Thats how I found pirate. Pirate's 14 bolt bible was key in my decision to start building a 77 chevy pickup for class 8 desert racing. I couldnt afford a $15,000 race axle, but thanks to pirate and a few other key sources of info I know the 14b will work for my needs.
I have to say that I have posted on here several times and gotten a pretty frosty reception. Maybe this new forum will help expand some horizons for both camps. The 'experts' on rdc think you have to have a $15K axle or you dont have a chance of even finishing a race. Actually Nick Vanderwey, who has won the baja 500 5 times in class 8, ran a 14 bolt for 2 1/2 SEASONS of full-on score racing before upgrading. So here's to successful technology cross-pollination of both forms of off-roading!
Heck yeah, I'm just a dude living in Colorado, building a 1450 86 Toy and was wandering in anyone else in Colorado is gettin into this stuff. I've heard about the Fire Guys but that's it. Anyone else here? I'm pretty close to gettin mine goin. This is about what it looks like now.

There will be more of us poping up. I am head wrench & co-driver for Curtis/Grider Motorsports. We race Class 10 in SCORE & BITD. I`m also building a Class 12 Pro car for MDR. This is a great site for 4X4 info! I`ve gotten a TON of great ideas for my 4Runner.

i wonder - is that a TT???
what kind of front suspension is this? i never saw a TT with such an IFS.
how does the steering work?

That is called Beam suspension, derived from the Ford truck I-beam front end. They are simple and strong, but have bad geometry. Some prefer beams, some prefer A-arms, but arms are superior in most ways. There are many threads about this on dezertrangers.com.

Well not a "TRUE" TT.......Just a "PRERUNNER" or a 1450 class truck that got outta hand ...so it looks to me they are running it in "Unlimited"

Got any more pics? I'm in the planning stages of a mid-eighties 4 runner, setup for mixed use crawling and some go-fast stuff. I'd love pics of how you tied the cage into the cab, etc. I don't plan on keeping any of the stock frame, all tube to keep the weight down.
