I read a thread or some article, can't find it now, about the AX15 changing around 91. Reason I ask is I am looking at buying a 91 and would want to mate a D300 to the AX15 but want to make sure the AX15 of a 91 is the same as all the others.
Thanks and sorry if this is a double post, I couldn't find it in any others.

I think it was '95, someone correct me if i'm wrong, that they changed the AX-15 to an external slave. I would get this one because it is much easier to service.

The AX15 in my 1990 XJ has changed a whole bunch.
It doesn't go into reverse as smooth as it used to and it leaks in a few spots. the exterior has oxidized an is tinted a redish color from wheeling in red dirt.

I think...
In YJs the AX-15s in 1990 had bellhousings and input shaft lengths to mate to a 258. I think it was the only year the AX-15 was offered with the old AMC bolt pattern...
They switched over to the 4.0 in '91. Maybe that's what you're talking about.
Don't know if this helps your situation any though...

my '95 AX15 I swapped into my formerly 2wd MJ in place of the '90 AX15 is different only in the pilot shaft diameter. The '95 is larger in pilot shaft diameter.
I had to take a bronze pilot bushing that fit the pilot shaft and have the outside diameter turned down to fit the crankshaft bushing hole.
