: New Bumper pics
Rudezuk 05-03-2002, 09:33 AM Well i decided to make a bumper, couldnt see spending a couple hundred bucks on something that i could build....Here are a couple shots of it.
It is made from a 2x6 base and the rest is 2x2, and I made my own hinge too!

Nice Rude!
I like the shiny black paint. bling! bling! Your spare isn't full size is it? I was just wondering if there would be any window left if you had a 37 hanging out back?
Any chance of a side profile pic? I really got to see what a zuk on 37's looks liked, without (much) of a WB stretch.
don't buy anything you can make!
How's the 6:1's?

I just threw on the paint for a pic...It will go back to flat black like the rest of the rig!
I can fit a 38" on it no problem, that is a 35 on it now.
6:1's are AWESOME!!!! (thanks Dave!)
I like it! 37's ain't too big. I'm definitely going 37's!
TNToy 05-03-2002, 10:31 AM Best way I've found (my toy is flat tan, bumper, grille, ect. is flat black) is to do what you did and paint something gloss black, let it dry for a day or so & get hard, and then paint it flat black.
Flat paints are just plain soft, easily scratched. Gloss ones seem to develop a 'hard-shell' to them - kinda like a clear coat on a cars paint.
And here's a couple pics of Kevin Walker's sammy. 37" boggers, about stock WB, SOA w/ YJs, D44s F&R:

Rudezuk 05-03-2002, 10:33 AM I do that same paint technique!!! Gloss paint holds up alot better!!
Azrckcrawler 05-03-2002, 10:41 AM Nice job on the bumper. Did you use LED's? I tried some small lights like those and they weren't bright enough.

Yeah they are LED's, the shop that sold me the lights messed up though....They arent the Dual Filiment type....So there is only one brightness to them (marker Lights)....SO ill change those out today....
To keep the cops off of your but i placed some tubing in the end of the bumper for a quick release mudflap.
Tusker 05-03-2002, 12:10 PM Nice job, I like that bumper. Have you got a better picture of it on the vehicle (maybe one in the daylight :D lol) ? I'd like to see what the clearance looks like.

Tusker 05-03-2002, 12:31 PM Thanks Doc. That is one of the best bumpers I have seen.
Rude,
Do you drive that thing on the road? I thought it was a trailer queen for the Dodge to pull? I was at a ramp (posing) contest on the weekend and I figure the cops have been on the prowl handing out the inspections. They ain't very nice up here. Some cool ideas for quick disconnects though.

Oh yeah, i drive that to and from the trails!
Dont have a trailer yet, ill get one when i move to a house with some property.
I cruised up to Bassie Falls a few weeks ago and got popped for a mudflap ticket......So i figure that ill put some mud flaps on a pipe, slide the pipe into the ends of the bumper and use pins to hold them in place.
tipover 05-03-2002, 02:08 PM rudezuk, were you at the redneck party a couple of weeks ago? If I knew it was you I would have talked to you. I was in the red Zuk. Any way, I got something that you may be interested in. PM me!

Youve got mail
78mphgpr 05-03-2002, 03:38 PM How much!? I'll take one without the spare tire rack!
Rudezuk 05-03-2002, 03:48 PM You just want a rear bumper with lights?
Do you want a hitch on it?
Pm me and well talk!
78mphgpr 05-03-2002, 04:48 PM Check your pm.
Darby 05-03-2002, 06:14 PM Hey RUDE how did you attach the bumper and what did you use for your tire rack hinge?
zuk88 05-03-2002, 06:59 PM Sweet:D

I used metal....:flipoff2:
I cant give all of my secrets away...
But i braced the rear with some 1/4 angle and then mounted it to that with some 2x2.

Hah:rolleyes: Metal he says.. like theres some sort of "magical" element that can be bent and welded and fused into any shape possible!!!... HAH fat chance!:D Next thing you know there'll be a tax on cigarettes!:flipoff2:
billjohn 05-06-2002, 08:50 AM Nice. I like the fact that the hinge point isn't all the way out to the end, but how much clearance did it leave when you open the tailgate? Does it hit the hinge?
Rudezuk 05-06-2002, 09:21 AM It does hit the hinge....Did that on purpose...Going to be building a special box that will fit be hind the seat and maybe have a truck like tailgate that opens up for it...
Looking4aCrawler 05-08-2002, 10:27 AM I dont have the time or equipment to build a bumper like that but would like to have one just like it on my 88 Zuk. I live in Folsom, Ca. and I see you live in Elk Grove. You want to make some money? Can you build me one like it?
Dave
TNToy 05-08-2002, 12:15 PM Rude, why did you go with the rear flange to mount a spare to, as opposed to a spindle? I've seen several jeep tire carriers set up like that. They bolt a spindle (bolted to the bumper's tire carrier) and a pair of spare bearings & locking hub right there at the wheel. Also kinda cool being able to spin the spare tire like a little wheel-of-fortune deal. :cool2:
Though the Wheel of Fortune can be fun back in camp its a general PITA unless you stop it from rotating. To give you an idea of what I'm talking about. Imagine lifting your tire /rim from the ground to at least chest height (Ok it's not that hard but...). Then imagine trying to put it on to a spindle (if you are a guy and aren't good at putting a spindle into a hole then you've got problems!). Here's the hard part, imagine the spindle (bolt pattern) keeps spinning out of the way everytime you go to put it on. If you are good at putting a spindle into moving objects either you are in Jail or have way more manual dexterity than I do. Any ways when we inherited a wheel of fortune spare rack we made it imobile for that very reason (plus the Cops don't like seeing your truck going down the highway /freeway with your rear tire spinning in the wind).
Just my .02

billjohn 05-08-2002, 03:07 PM Then do like I did and weld in an axle stub... Then you can 'lock' the hub when you need to.
{simple answers to simple problems}
Shrock 05-08-2002, 03:23 PM What is the point of this? It seem like it is just making it more complicated and more expensive...a fawking hub on a spare tire...????

The first time you crack a hub on a rock (I haven't seen a stock unit actually explode like on a Jeep yet) and you don't have any left in your spares box you will know EXACTLY why you have a spare on your spare.
If it is cost you're worried about, then why use a spindle at all... just weld three bolts to a scrap of plate... Why do it right? Because it gives the install a cleaner look. Like you knew what you were doing when you built it. I'm not saying to go out and get the SOB chromed, just do it clean the first time.
I hide spare parts all over my rig. This just makes it look like it was meant to be there.

absolutely. while not "clean install" looking (sigh...:D ) my rig is bristling with unconventional spots for spares 'n stuff.
it's tough finding places to stow things outside without having them either look shitty, be too hard to access, or be too easy for thieves to make off with.
also i use my spare tire mount AND the holes in the actual rim itself to hook on to with ratchet straps and things for camping etc. having it spin without means of "lock-out" would be too unwieldy for my liking.:)
Rudezuk 05-08-2002, 10:20 PM Well the reason i didnt go with a hub assembly......Have you ever picked up a F150 hub and rotor assembly?? They are pretty damn heavy.....Prolly 3 times the weight of my axle flange!
If i was still running crappy zuk axles then i would have thought about that.
