Ok, so a friend and I decided we want to get into desert racing. I have been doing the whole off roading thing for a few years and have fabbed up a decent trail rig, but after racing DH MTBs for years I have the urge to once again throw myself into the air at high speeds :D
I know there are several classes of desert racing, and I was wondering if someone could post up a link to a site with a good layout of the restrictions and regulations for the different classes. We want to build a sick rig, yet still have it be in a class we can race it in.
Right now what we want to build up is a 2003 extended cab short bed 2500 Silverado 2wd Diesel. Get long travel front and rear suspension, coilovers up front, leafs in rear. Stock rear axle with upgraded shafts and gears. Internal cage and engine cage. Front and rear fiberglass fenders, and a modified bed. What class would a truck like that put us into, and can a truck like that even fit into a class?

I believe most organizations follow score rules but from what i've heard mdr is supposed to have a rulebook out this year. you can download the mdr rules in pdf from their website, the score rulebook is $25.00. Dont really know what type of desert racing you want to do but with what you described these would be the closest thing. Some of the sites I put up have good forums with alot of info to get you started. Good luck and make sure you post your build of your truck, your gonna have alot of fun!

Check http://www.bitd.com for a detailed set of online rules. There area lot of stock-type vehicle classes, but most of them won't allow changes like coilovers, fiberglass, etc. No large sanctioning body has a class like you describe as far as I know, but munson mentioned some good choices to explore. Worse, BITD is in bed with Ford, so you'd have the potential for a ton more payback with a Ford. I haven't checked lately, but Ford used to pay $10K on top of the regular purse to a stock-class winner in a Ford, and some for 2nd & 3rd as well.
Oh, and check out what you can about Kreg Donahoe's "stock" Super Duty.

The Scaroni's used to run a diesel Excursion that rocked. IIRC, they won some races with it, got lots of Ford help, and then sold it for about $30k a couple years ago at LeDuc's Rialto swapmeet.
Pretty sure some of the stuff you mentioned would either eliminate you altogether, or at least bump you into a class that would not only hand you your ass, but they'd probably violently hurl it at you. Repeatedly.
My best suggestion is do A LOT of looking and research before committing to a class or a certain vehicle, and don't get too fond of ideal mods until you read all the rulebooks and attend at least a few races with rulebooks and cameras in hand. Don't be afraid to walk up and ask anyone you see at a race about anything you're not sure about. Knowledge goes a long way.

The first thing I would do if I was building that truck and wanted to run score (Who dosn't want to run the 1000) Is call the tech line and ask about the turbo on the diesel. If I am reading my rulebook right they are only allowed in stock class trucks and a n/a diesel is gonna be to down on power to enjoy.

Also blow the cash on the rulebook its good for reading.

The perfect class for what you describe is 1450 in MDR. The place to research this is http://www.dezertrangers.com/cgi-bin/ib/ikonboard.cgi

For a beginers class a Pro-Modified 1450 / 1400 class is a good bet.
Check out http://minitruckracing.net and click on 1450/1400. The rules are posted there.
BITD & SCORE are great resources for saftey specs, build info, etc.
If you have big $ you can run Class 8 or Trophy Truck.
