: Steering Arm Removal, revisited

I just picked up a set Dana 44 flat top knuckles for my Jeep. I cannot persuade the steering arm off of the knuckle. I searched and read about prying between the conical spacers (tried it, no luck), and beating on the arm with a big hammer. Problem is the steering arm has been torched off near the knuckle, so there is not much left to beat on with a hammer. The studs are mangled beyond use, so no concern for them, only getting them out.

Any other suggestions?

I had the same problem once. So I ran my torch about a 3/8 of an inch from the base of the knuckle, burning off the arm/studs/washers. I then popped of the last remaning peice with a chisel and used a small pipe wrench and the heat from torching to remove the studs. I suppose you could also do this with a band saw or grinder with a cutoff wheel if you are worried about the heat weakening the knuckle or dont have a torch.

OK, that sounds like something to try. I'll try with the chop saw and cut across where the cones end, to keep the optimum amount of stud left to torque on.

Anyone know how deep the cone washer/spacers go down?

Any other ideas?

they go in about half an inch. Make sure you have an extra grinding wheel or two, because they will go fast with the thich steel and all.
