This sounds like the combo I am now looking at for sale for 125 bucks. I figured that the 420 is worth that and I know nothing about the transfercase. What can someone tell me about it???

T221 has 4 separate shafts

~2:1 low range

Rear output sits lower than input :D

SM420/T221 is a '67 only item. 60-66 is a divorced T221. 68-69 is a SM465/T221. 70-up is NP205.

Nothing special about the 4wd SM420 - same as a 2wd. All were 10-spline.

Do note that the input torque rating on the SM420 is a lousy 281 lb-ft.

Not much available to re-build a 221 - only bearings and seals - no gearsets, etc. (out of production too long). a great case for a lifted rig because of the low centered rear output. I sold a 221 a year or so back for $100 - the 420 is worth that around here.

Yes!!!!! Now I remember!!!! As a kid I remember seeing this gear box hanging down under the 60s trucks and thinking how cool it looked since you could see the driveline go around as it went down the road!!!!!
I do think that unless I go spring over on the Willys truck I might be hanging low or half of the tranny in the cab with me or something like that to get some ground clearance for this hulk in an old style Willys truck..... what do ya think or do I just sell the thing and use the Dana 18 that I originaly had in mind and fork out to Novak the 500 (OUCH!!!!!) for the adapter and call it good!!??????????? I could then also run the Warn overdrive that I have in mind. Decisions Decisions!!!!!!!
Thanks, Dave
