I have an older 327 (year unknown) I was attempting to swap out all the drive pulleys when I got to the water pump. The new 3 groove pully would not seat fully on the water pump. I seem to recall that there is a short and a long water pump available. Is this true? If thats the case I can just swap mine out for one correct? Thanks,

It sounds like what you have is a short water pump with long water pump pulleys. (If the pulley is bottoming out on body of the water pump)

If your crank pulley is cup shaped too, it sounds like you have pulleys for a long water pump set-up.

The other problem you'll run into if your just trying to install long pump pulleys is the alternator / power stering brakets wont work either.

If you look in a summit or jegs catalog, they make seperate brackets for short and long water pump applications.

short pump was last in 68 on cars except vettes,
and in 72 on light trucks(1 ton and under)

huge difference between a short and long pump

plain as day

short pump is way smaller in size overall than a long pump

would be very obvious

if its a 327 and has a factory correct pump on it then it is still short

swap a long pump on it off any later engine if you are going to swap later alternator and p/s onto it

or find a short pump pulley if you are jut missing that only

what do you have or what dont you have intact on the 327 ?

is it driver side or pass side alternator ?

if you dont have the original style p/s on it then youll have to find one for it to work right

this stuff is all different than long pump stuff

everything

if you had pics we could help alot better than this

good luck

I pulled all the pulleys plus the power steering pump and brackets off a 78 Monte Carlo. Everything seems to fit fine except the water pump pulley, because it hits the pump housing. It seems that if I get a long style water pump, everything should work fine. My alt. is on the driver side, but looks like all I need to do is shorten and modify the adjusting bracket to make it work. Thanks for the help,
