i thought is was $169 ~ too much when you have to buy two - and you still don't end up with over 19 gallons :Lame:

I'm also going to a 22(ish) gallon fuel cell. Best bet if you ask me

Those spaces make a great place to mount a oil cooler, thats what i buddy Dave did with his space when he got rid of the stock fuel tanks for dual 20 gallon fuel cells in his 800.

There was a factory toolbox option for those spaces.

Where's "The Mick" - his '61 was supposed to have the factory toolbox.

My 64 had one if the tool boxes but someone welded it up and threw a tank in there...I have since ground the hinge down so that the old cage could sit flat.

Yes, and no.

The 61 has a factory tool box. real fancy, its a piano hinged flap of steel and a plate for the bottom, down by the rocker.

Unfortunatly, I had to sell the 61 to finance the Terra :(:(:(:(

Thanks for all the help guys. Now I'm starting to consider a fuel cell to save some head aches and gain some fuel capacity.

Why? Get some good used 10 gallon tanks in there, then either a Scout 2 tank under the rear, or a 1989 or so Ford Econoline van tank is supposed to fit sweet. I personeely have done the Scout 2 Stock tank in between the frame rails of a 63 for a customer. Now he has 40 gallon capacity for all weekend play and long trips into the mountains.

Just my.098345 cents worth

Do you have any pictures of the Scout II tank job John? How far does it hang below the frame rails?

Scout Dude , thanks for the link. I think that's a little too much cash for a gas tank, though. I think I might go with a cell.

Hey KornFed,
I tried PM, but it won't go through...

I had a few questions for you.......
I'm in the same boat you are about your gas tanks...
I'm about to pull both of mine (63'/80).
One had bad gas, the other was dry/rusty...
I'm face with the following dilemas:
Have my current tanks sent out to be cleaned lined (about $125 each),
Clean/Line them myself ($$?).
Or buy the plastics ($135 each).....
All this is determined by finding once I pull them this week.

I'm interested in finding out what you did, & how much $$ it cost...

Let me know...
MochaMike.....

PS- What's all this about Fuel Cells? Any links?

Well, I just put in a 20 gal fuel cell after tring to do everything I could to use my current tanks...however, these thing fawken leak...there seems to be no cure. I do have some old info about swapping to a different filler hose (Froma buick I think) but I was tired of two tanks, my fuel tank selector was starting to leak, it was just too painful:mad: :D ...So, I put in an Aluminum cell from Scummit yesterday. It is currently sitting in the be, but I will cut out a hole and lower it about 8" later on.

Tell me more about the filler hose....
I was thinking of just finding some rubber hose & cut it...
(mine fell apart the second I touched it....)
I here the plastic tanks take forever to fill, unless you have a air intake.

How much did the Summit tank run?

Filler hose thing: This is copied and pasted froma word doc where I saved this some time ago. I don't know who wrote it or where I saved it from..but anyways:

"If you own a Scout 80/800, gas leaks out the filler neck and down the side everytime you make a right (or left) turn when the tank is above half-full. With the price of gas nowadays, who can afford to waste it! Here's the ultimate solution which I did to my Scout. Go the junkyard and find a Grand Marquis from about the late 80's or early 90's. Yank the filler neck out of it. It's about two feet long and may be kind of hard to get out. Save the four mounting screws and also the backplate. Once you get it, go to the store and get a radiator hose with a 90 degree bend in it and an inside diameter of about 2". When you get home, cut the new filler neck back so it only sticks through the body about 2.5 - 3". Next, remove the old filler neck assembly from your Scout. Drill four 3/16" holes just outside the stock mounting holes in the quarter panel. Next, trim the radiator hose to fit, angling the end accordingly. The hose will fit over the gas tank ok, but it will be very difficult to slide it over the new filler neck. My reccomendation is that you force it on using a lot of WD-40 and let it sit overnight so it retains it's shape. Install the filler neck through the stock hole (it fits perfect) and stick the hose on the backside. Next, slide the backing plate over the end of the hose, and butt it up against the body. Put the screws through the holes you drilled, and into the backing plate. Tighten the screws down and make sure to get the other end of the hose onto the gas tank. Put some hose clamps on everything and you're done! No more spilled gas! The following pics were taken right after I installed the new filler neck and filled it up to the TOP and drove around for about 20 minutes, making hard left and right turns. Not a drop was spilled. Also, it was very easy to fill up at the gas station, no problems.

And Fuel Cell: $220 with shipping:eek: fittings are extra
