: Weekend Report 10/28-10/29
Diesel Smoke 10-29-2006, 10:53 PM I actually got something done this weekend.
I spent Saturday working on Rock Scout. Since Team TracTractor is going on a run next weekend, I needed to get the broken axle out of the rear and the new one in. Sound simple as was, until I couldn't get the broke piece out of the spool. I tried the magent trick, but with the splines as twisted as they were, it was hopeless. I went ahead and pulled the other shaft out and what do I find? TWISTED SPLINES!! So now I have to replace BOTH shafts, which isn't a big deal, as I have two, but only one has a good bearing and seal on it. Still, I figure no big deal......Sure right!! So, I spend the next hour trying to get the carrier out. Pryed it every which way, pulled, twited and wiggled...no go. I figure I'll let it sit and fix the bolts I lost out of the power steering mount. Well upon close inspection (like actually looking at it, instead of glancing), I find the two bolts I was missing was actually three and the mount they were missing out of was the engine mount, not the power steering mount. Fortunaly I had one bolt left that was keeping the power house of a 196 in the engine bay. It does explain quite a bit, the movement of the transmissions towards the end of the Naches trip, the loose exhasut pipe, the poor steering. I am working by myself, so I figure it would be nice to have another set of hands to run the jack to get the engine back in place, so I call my Dad, but no answer. Fine I think, I am going to have lunch. After lunch I run and get a new seal and bearing for the other shaft and the hardware I need to fix the engine mount. Back home, fix the engine mount and Dad shows up. I tell him I spent over an houre trying to get the spool out and it wouldn't budge. Of course he dinks with it for 5 minutes and it falls in his lap. Sometimes I think God is trying to teach me something, what I have no clue. Anyway we get the little stub out and throw the carrier back together. Now it's late and I need a press, so I call Binderbound. Find out he's working late and tell him I'll see him in an hour. I buttone up the diff, throw the one good shaft I have in and tear over to the see Binderbound. Once there, the problems start again. First we can't the the shaft into the press without dropping the table to the floor, then we run out of ram, so we use a piece of tube. Once it's all cribbed up, the press doesn't have enough power to remove the bearing. IT does however distort it enought so I couldn't use it even if I wanted to, after all the shaft was replaced because of a bad seal. So Dad and I head home, I put the tire back on the one side that's buttoned up and tarp the truck.
Sunday: Start packing for my 2 week training course at the State Police Academy. Well in the middle of the 2 weeks we are going wheeling, hence all the work on Saturday. My Dad calls me when they get home from church and I run over to use his neighbors press. Get the axle in and cribbed no problem, but even with the press maxed out it won't budge the bearing. Herman (my Dad's neighbor, he's from Missouri, so he's got that slow calculated way about him) goes "Carl, hand me that hammer." I say "I don't think we can pound it off Herman." He just smiles and gives the axle shaft a little tap. As he does this on the third tap BANG the bearing comes loose and all is right with the world. Scared me to death and Herman laughed his ass off. I think he did it on purpose, but whatever, I got my bearing changed. It was then back home, shaft installed and the Scout buttoned up and ready to go for next weekend. I spent the rest of the day packing for two seperate trips and getting everything washed and ironed. Dress code fot eh Academy is Buisness, I hate wearing anything but jeans, so slacks and button up shirts don't suit me well, but the job is a great one, so I gotta do what I gotta do. Oh, I forgot, Binderbound came by on Sunday morning and "borrowed" some parts!:flipoff2:
That's it!
CLIFFNOTES: Typical "Rock Scout" weekend. Multiple trips to the store for bolts and parts, while only using half of what I buy. Then little task taking 10 times longer then they should. People having a good laugh at my expense, I worked my ass off for very little progress, but it's worth it, as next weekend I"ll be wheeling!!
Brandon 10-29-2006, 11:15 PM thanks for the cliffnotes, I'll read the whole thing another time but I did jump right to the cliffnote ;)
I dropped my engine about 3", bolted on my front driveline (well almost, I guess the d300 front output is made for straps which I don't have (threaded yoke), bleh
Bill usn-1 10-30-2006, 04:20 AM but even with the press maxed out it won't budge the bearing.
Was this after removing the collar?
I never reuse the collars so I drill 2 holes about 180° apart and just split the collar off the axle. Then the bearing comes right off.
Only need the press for the new one!
NVScouter 10-30-2006, 04:37 AM I'm still on light duty for the next week so I didnt do much this weekend physicaly but holy cow did I research and wheel and deal.
Saturday spent the whole morning in town with the wife shopping, then we played pool/air hockey and drank beer for a few hours :smokin:
Sunday was the major wheel+deal day. Got to BS with MochaMike for a bit. Decided to completely swap build projects and now I should be full on wheeling well before Christmas.
The only bad part is I'm 95% done with my T-19 to TF727 swap on my 78 that was going to be going up for sale. Now I'm keeping it and doing a SOA I need to put the T19 back in. So I'll probobly put the brand new B&M Unishifter, chrystler cable, and maybe the TF727/D20 up in classifeds too.
Its amazing how fast stuff can change :shaking:
Mechanos 10-30-2006, 06:09 AM Hooked up with HOS on Friday night and fed him some KC bbq. Then went to a bar.... didn't know it, but they were having Halloween costume party that night so there was plenty to look at. (Halloween costume party + liquor + women = as little clothing as possible. Mark has pics) Naturally, Mark tried to pick up on a hooker..... then he tried spooning with me.
Sat. I started coming down with a cold or some other fawking ick, so I didn't crawl out of bed till 11:30. I took some medicine that laid me out so I hit the couch until about 6:30pm. By then I was feeling better, so met up with Mark again to listen to him sing some kareoke. He tried to butter me up with some cheesy Barry Manilow songs, but once again, I was able to fend off his persistant spooning advances. :flipoff2:
Sun. it was just too damn nice out to waste the day. 77° and sunny. Took the dog out and turned him loose to run in the woods, watched some guys fly their RC airplanes, and then got to work finishing up my air/hydro bender conversion.

uglyscout 10-30-2006, 07:06 AM Diesel Smoke -- Are those the garbage shafts you guys pulled from my scrap pile :D
Fri - Drove my new tow rig to work for the 1st time...
Sat - Watched Oregon State hand USC a HUGE defeat!!! I haven't had that much fun at a football game in years. Sweeeettttaaa!!!! Go Beavs!
Sun - Nothing.
BLK Scout 800 10-30-2006, 07:20 AM I wheeled and drank
troutbum 10-30-2006, 07:33 AM put the body back on for the last time :D and got the house ready for snow.
Dirt Boy 10-30-2006, 07:36 AM Wheeled! Went out Sat with a great crew of folks and got introduced to some trails around Tucson, met folks and had a great time. Figured out that I need to tune the scout a bit more to the elevation change from Wyoming, had to be kinda heavy on the gas to keep from stalling. Sunday went out to breakfast with my wife, hit the thrift stores for halloween costumes, and cleaned the house.
IHC-6 10-30-2006, 08:59 AM I cleaned out my chimney, and got my wood stove working again for the first time in two years.
Decided I am not giving the gas company my first born anymore each winter.:mad3:
Spent the weekend helping a buddy rototill his back yard for a new lawn. He used my tractor/tiller, because he couldn't find one to rent anywhere, and it had to be done because like usual, he put it off till the last moment.:shaking:
Got some work done on the Travelall earlier last week when UglyScout and some other good friends came by and we burned up some grinding wheels on the D60 I am putting in the truck. :D
tsm1mt 10-30-2006, 09:16 AM I actually got something done this weekend.
Next time, use Bill's trick, or just take a cut-off wheel and CUT the bearing off (old pros use a torch, but you don't want to heat the shaft).
As for the trips to the store.. you've seen my house.. 15 minute drive to the hardware store.
I now stock up on bolts and have bins full of various sizes and lengths. I have wheel bearing seals "in stock", brake hardware kits, master cylinders, brake pads, oil, grease, U-joints (axle and driveshaft) and all of that other crap that bites you on a Sunday afternoon.
I spent an hour on Saturday trying to get my bandsaw to cut straight again. I broke a blade a couple of weeks ago and put on the spare - changing nothing else, it now cuts down and away. It's not *too* bad after a lot of adjustments, but still has a slice in it's swing (or is that hook? I never paid attention to golf terms).
Cut a few pieces for the RTI ramp but little overall progress.
Watched my FIL replace the rear output seal on my BIL's Toyota 2wd pickup.
On Sunday about the only thing I got done was to go drag another turd home.

http://tigger.tmcom.com/~tsm1/PlainGallery/2006Blue1974Scout2/DCP_0005.sized.jpg
My neighbors must love me.. the Chevy truck hasn't gone away yet, and now I drag home another pile. :D
Scout might not be too bad. Supposed to run, but needs a starter (or at least a battery - this one's dead).
Complete 1974. Disc Dana 30, ps, pb, 304/T18, 3.73 gears and 31s.
Anyone need another Scout?
What I need to do is clean it up, run it around town a few weeks, and put a For Sale sign in the window. *I* can't justify keeping it (which means I'll have a VERY hard time convincing Michelle we "need" it). It's not in nice enough shape to be a keeper (for me) - rear wheel arch rust, inner fender rust, rocker rust, rear cargo floor rust.
It's not terminal, but it will be before too much longer.
Nice enough from 20ft I might make some money if I sell it.
If the title doesn't get cleaned up (long story.. gal bought it, sold it to dad, sold it to a transient, sold it back to dad, gave to grandson who doesn't want it, so mom has it again and is selling it) I think I have the axles sold to a Jeeper for what I have into the Scout.
Too bad it's a 304.. I was hoping for a '74 345 to put into my other '74 pickup. 345/auto/3.73s would be OK for towing, but I'm not sure about the 304. Still.. beats what my typical rebuilding expenses are. :D
Sunday it started out nice.. but by the time we got home it was blowing snow and cold.. ~14deg this morning.
I'm not sure I like the Buick in the snow. Michelle had the ABS kick in on the way home last night (I followed in the '73 Scout) and this morning I got to feel what "traction control" is like.. pffbbtt. It just means "goes really slow".. POS FWD cars.
Give me "pull the stick and goes like hell" any day - even if I am throwing snow at everyone else the entire way across the intersection. :flipoff2:
Now if I can just find a SD33T Scout and get 20+mpg instead of the 8 out of the injected 304, we'd be in business.
Harvester of Sorrow 10-30-2006, 12:04 PM I ate bbq
I drank beer
I ate bbq
I watched Seattle get beat by 2 KC Chiefs players...
I ate bbq
I drank 3 more beers

YellowIH 10-30-2006, 12:21 PM I worked on installing my SSII soft doors. PITA POS's.
Wiper blades stopped working. I pulled the cover and am trying to get the stuff reattached. What a waste of time. Seems like those little clips would be more common. Guess I'm just lucky enouhg mine fell off. :shaking:
SSII mirrors look like ass. I am gonna trade'em off.
Looking to re-gear with 4.88's and a ring gear spacer for the rear 60...hate to drop all that $$ on a detroit.....maybe it would be money well spent.
Sunday did nada...zip, zero.
I think the Rubicon Jeep may become the 4wheeling bitch and the Scout the show piece for fun..... Its about to need tires and 33's ought to be easy to fit and a good place to start.
ChiScouter 10-30-2006, 12:43 PM Since we didn't get an invite to the KC spoonfest:flipoff2: I drove out to UrbanWheelers and cut up 5k of rusty metal into a few useable pieces on Sat. On Sunday I just had a feeling that there was a big lunker hiding at my fav fishing hole. I didn't really come well preped and removing the pig was a clusterfawk It took 3 hours to land the big lunker in my trailer. The truck had a belt driven hyd pump and the most hyd handles I have ever seen in a truck.
scout254 10-30-2006, 01:38 PM nothing scout related:shaking: Drove to Sacramento instead.
SSGTWC 10-30-2006, 02:18 PM Hooked up with HOS on Friday night and fed him some KC bbq. I'm gonna need to stock up on some popcorn.

I stopped reading after pg 3. Too much web wheeling on that board. Too much "buggy hate" as well... even though allot of them would take or build one in a heart beat if given the opportunity.
That whole board makes me laugh, the 'regulars' on there are such hypocrites. They bitch and whine and then turn around an do the same things now that they are 'in power' that they complained (and continue to complain) about on the Snort board.
o-well, I digress. Nothing IH related this weekend. Did some yard work, ran some errands. Carved pumpkins.....
Mechanos 10-30-2006, 05:07 PM Got a write up on the bender construction? Looks simple and fairly cheap to build.
Nice work!!
Let's see..... I took a bunch of measurements, then drew it up. Next I cut all the steel and welded it together. After bolting the bender to the frame, I installed the ram and the dies. Loaded up a stick of tube and made a bend to test it out. :flipoff2: :flipoff2:
No... I haven't done any kind of a write up yet... well, except for the cliff notes above.
CrossedUp 10-30-2006, 06:30 PM Was this after removing the collar?
I never reuse the collars so I drill 2 holes about 180° apart and just split the collar off the axle. Then the bearing comes right off.
Only need the press for the new one!
The easiest way is an 4'' 1/2'' electric cut off wheel. I cut the retainer right down to the shaft, then stick a chisel in that slice, one good whack and it falls right down, or slides down. Then cut the bearing cage twice, 180 degrees from either side, bend it back, let the rollers fall out, then pull the cage off.Cut off wheel the race, and do the same chisel trick as before. The whole process should take no longer than 5 minutes and involves no pressing.
CrossedUp 10-30-2006, 06:36 PM Wheeled! Went out Sat with a great crew of folks and got introduced to some trails around Tucson, met folks and had a great time. Ryan right? Are you coming in this week. Those tires might get sold tomorrow (tues).
Diesel Smoke 10-30-2006, 08:12 PM I completely forgot about taking the collar off FIRST, no wonder it was such a pain in the ass!!
Dirt Boy 10-30-2006, 08:59 PM Ryan right? Are you coming in this week. Those tires might get sold tomorrow (tues).
Yeah, I swung by today but you were in phx. I'll swing by in the morning to get things rolling. Should be able to get there by 10am. Tried to get over on Friday but I'm way better at navigating in the backcountry than in the city, I must have drove right past the turn off to you guys - twice. anyway, I know where it is now.
Mechanos 10-30-2006, 09:05 PM OK.... here's what I should have gotten done this weekend if I wasn't laid up sick Saturday. I finished up bending the humble beginings of my grille guard. I'm still working out the details of how to efficiently use the bender.

WTF.. after reading all of that :crybaby: crap, the thread is closed and I can't even take a turn at churning the pot? :pout:
Bottom line is most guys that wheel their DDs and whine about the trailered rigs would trade places if they could.. in fact, most of them eventually do.
..like me. :D I don't even trailer my junk that often, but I surely don't rely on it getting me to work on Monday.. but then, when you own a fleet of POS Scouts, you have that luxury.
Not so when you're makin' payments on your POS. :D

Did you buy your shoe from pro tools? Yours looks farther along then mine, I got a bunch of tube bent up as I had to return the bender. Nothing installed. I just made some bars to go along the fenders and working on a poison spyder custom copy rear tire carrier /stinger. My bender is for electrical work so it makes some big 90's so I did not make a grill guard
Mechanos 11-01-2006, 05:25 AM The bender is a JDČ Model 3 and belongs to a friend of mine. I just built the hydro stand for it 'cause I have no place to mount the manual pedastle. Nothing is attached in that pic... it's just sitting on there. I was going to work on it last night, but I was infested with ghouls & goblins and the like...

FWIW, not having a place to mount the bender is why I opted to just use my porta-power to power the bender.
Nothing to fab up, just thread the ram in and go. :D
Mechanos 11-01-2006, 12:18 PM I could have gone with the standard long ram jack for half the money.... but it takes eleventy million pumps of the handle to extend the ram on full stroke. The air/hydro ram is a little faster than I could hand pump it and all I have to do is squeeze the lever and let off when I'm done. It also has a locking clip thingy, so I just squeeze, lock and stand there until the stroke is about done, then squeeze, unlock and let off. Doesn't get much easier than that.
Is your porta-power air/hydro or just plain old manual pump.

Manual pump at the moment, but you can put an air/hydro pump into the mix and replace the "pump-pump-pump" hand pump with "foot control" easily enough. Almost did it one weekend.
I would do it if I were going to stick with the porta-power setup. Eventually I'm going to finish collecting the parts to do the tie-rod cylinder electric/hydraulic setup that's so popular. I have the pump, just haven't bought the spool valve and ram.

For some reason I thought ya made the arms and the frame and purchased the "shoe".
Nevermind!! :D
Mechanos 11-01-2006, 03:54 PM I do have the arms in a CAD file... I could always have the arms cut on the waterjet and then have the holes milled. I don't know what that would cost, but it might be cheaper than $295 for Model 3 (w/ no dies).
ih4ever 11-01-2006, 04:48 PM finally got my brakes done.. just need to bleed the system and, re gasket my front diff and ad fluid to some stuff and i should be on the road!!

srscout 11-03-2006, 09:13 PM Finished welding up the new cage then cleaned, sanded, primed and painted it. Took the rig for a short ride and that was about it. BTW the Pro-Tool's bender really kicks A**. Best investment (vehicle wise) I have made in a long time.
