I found that taking 13 1/4" is the difference between the length of a double cab bed and an extra cab/standard cab bed. I decided on 13" just in case I want to put a shell back on :D I used cut off wheels to do the initial cuts. Had to do minimal grinding to get the 2 pieces to match up right. I ended up getting them so close together that I didn't need any backing. Tight seam  :D
First step: Mark the cut lines

Second step: Cut

Third step: Line up and tack

Fourth step: Fully tack weld together, no pics sorry
Fifth step: Grind smooth

I chopped the end of the frame off and wanted to cap the ends with something, here's what I came up with :)

Very nice bodywork--looks like you're welding a bit too hot, and melting base metal out and into your weld--see the dips in your weld toward the bottom. Not an issue for just capping the frame--just some friendly constructive criticism.
Did your shackle bushings smoke when you welded that close to 'em?! :flipoff2:
The upside is that you're getting good penetration. Pause just a little bit so your electrode will fill in the gaps in the base metal. Also looks like you have a little bit of pitting--pausing will also let the gases bubble to the surface so your completed weld will be solid. :D

Yeah I was burning much too hot, I know :D Definitely not my best work, I was just tired of tack welding for 3 hours  I was using my Lincoln 3200hd (I think it's the 135 but the Home Depot version) on flux core, .035 wire. I may do the switch back to gas, we'll see :)

Oh! Flux would explain some of the pits...just pause and let the wire fill--it's not like you're welding so hot you're burning through. Don't turn the heat down, necessarily (and risk bird shit!)--just fill more. If you turn down the heat, you risk losing the good penetration you're getting (which not everybody with a wire welder understands).

Yep 10mm pistol and a 223? I think? I dunno, I didn't shoot it, I had my friend do it :D
I think I used about 10 cans to do the whole truck. It's getting to be time for another coat though, the older paint is so faded that it doesn't match the new paint anymore

Thanks Chass! You are my inspiration for using pipe protection:grinpimp: Next project: A bed cage similar to the one 4rnrrick made for his first gen extra cab build but made out of 1 1/4" pipe :smokin:

I'm not planning on having a top again. Although if I come across a good deal on a can back or the like, I may have to build my bed cage around that :D I used to have a Softopper then I got a hard shell, now I have nothing again:laughing: I'm planning on just having a bed cage and laying a tarp over the bed when I sleep at night camping :)

I don't have any specific pictures of my mudflaps and how they mount but Kyle got it right on. The flaps are basically bolted to square tube and that square tube slides into another piece of square tube and held in place by a pin. If I get a chance, I'll snap a picture for you :)

No build thread. What do you want to know on the suspension? I have 44044 leafs up front with 1 leaf taken out, 14" Bilstein 5125 shocks. In the rear I have 63" Chevys with 10" Bilstein 5150's.

That's what i was looking for. I've got a 96 standard cab and seriously thinking about a SAS but not sure about a front axle? That and it would be easier then the build i'm doing now. Alot less work that is.

If you want to go the easy route with leafs, go with a 81-88 Grand Waggy D44 up front, fairly cheap from the junkyard, same width and bolt pattern as the rear Tacoma axle. Then just pick up some 44044 leafs or 7 leaf waggy springs (if you want to keep it low) and it'll go right on  Read up on ttora.com/forum in the axle swap forum if you want more info.

I'm on the fence rather to do the 85 with the 4.3 and duals or my tacoma. The tacoma would be alot easier but i already have most of the parts ready to go in the 85 i just need to fab it all up. I just need stop being LAZY and get it started:laughing: .
