Hey, I am completely new to this and would like to learn about this hobby / way of life / whatever (call it what you will). I understand what a xfer case does, I just want to understand more about it (such as what does 4:1 mean etc) and how to judge one vs another. I tried googling it, but all I came up with is a bunch of posts about who has what.

Thanks in advance for your patience with me.

what rig do you have? A transfer case with a higher ration makes the rig crawl slower. This power is mulitplied with the tranmission ratio as well as the gear ratio in the axles as well. here is a link to an online gear ratio calculator that kinda shows you the relationship to it all;

Thanks for the reply. I have a 94 YJ 2.5L. (I asked in this section as my question was a general one vs Jeep specific) It is stock right now, but I have purchased an 8.8 for the rear (not yet installed) and want to start upgrading other things, I just do not know how things mate up (what can work with other parts) and what the benefits of one brand/model vs another is.

Again, all help is appreciated.

A red star is a great investment. Just keep readin' threads and most people are cool about answerin' PMs about their rig and stuff.
