I rebuilt a SM420 for my Jeep, it's pretty easy, just take it apart and put it back together. And I never had rebuilt a tranny before. My syncros were broken but I managed to figure it out even though they were in the bottom of the case. It's pretty straight forward. Just get a rebuild kit and do it. Warning: get a good tranny, while mine has driven for 30K+ after rebuild, the main shaft [2piece] was worn [makes a wobbling sound when idling] as well as 3rd gear [pops out when under load going down hill]. The guy told me it was in good shape, but he lied. I rebuilt it, couldn't see any problems visually[inexperience?], then found out it should have been a boat anchor.
