: about rockwell pinion brakes

i know the pads wear out faster and the swept area is smaller with only 1 rotor per axle. what if you ran a rotor on each side of the pinion? has anyone done it that would know if this would help?

everything should last longer (you are not subject to the gearing in the axel anymore) So less pressure on pedal = more brkaeing force. say you have 5:1 gearing and you switch to pinion brake from wheel brake, now you have to push 1/5th as hard to get the same braking.

I think he was asking about putting two pinion brakes on a rockwell, not switching from wheel to pinion brakes.

FULLSIZE- yeah you could do it, and i would assume that they would last longer. The only danger is that if you shear the bolts on the driveshaft-side pinion flange, the brake rotor on that side will fall off too. This is why i put my pinion brake on the rear side, away from the driveshaft, as do most ohers. Honestly though, i think you will be surprised with the pinion brakes. If you are running an auto tranny and 44" or bigger tires, then pad wear may be an issue, but with my SM465 and 35's i have noticed no pad wear at all and have been driving it around for almost 6 months... I just let it compression brake, and only use the brakes when i am going less than 10 mph. 6.72 gears make a big difference...

I think the fact that it takes very little pedal pressure to stop helps to cancel out the fact there is less swept area, and only two pads.

i think it would be MUCH easier and much cheaper to change the pads more frequently than to add one more pinion brake on the other side.
besides, it will give you too much braking power.
if you saw the avalanche sniper, you'd remember it's using only
ONE pinion brake for the entire vehicle, and that is enough for it
because of the 6.72 increase of braking power.
i have two pinion brakes in the Frog, one on each axle, and i want to tell you that my problem is too much braking power.
i have to put a spring on the pedal to make it harder to push.
i admit, the pads are in need for replacement more often, but what you suggested would cause other problems you could certainly do without.

i was reading some old info on a search i did that people were talking about the pads wearing faster and what not. i would only be running 1 rotor pr axle because i'm a cheap bastard and 2 is twice the work. i was just curious. thanks:D

yeah fullsize but elf-loser isnt telling you the whole story. Those pinion brakes heat up the pinion seals and they leak really badly. On top of that they cause premature pinion bearing failure. Why dont you just go with the hub brake kit from usa6x6 he recently found a set of rotors that will press on to the back of the rockwell hub with the hub flipped out and they will fit inside 16.5 inch wheels which makes hummer wheels perfect and leaves you at 88 inches with 42s which is the same as fullwidth chevy axles with regular ten inch wheels with normal backspacing. Ask elf-loser about the puddle of gear oil that collects inside his rotor on the back.:flipoff2: :rasta: :rainbow: :rainbow: :rainbow:

um, i have like $5 in my wallet right now. does that tell you how broke i'am? brake kit, hummer wheels? $$$$ i dont see how much heat i can create when the only time i touch the brakes is to hold me on a hill or rock i cant make. i wont be driving it much on the street, as in my local spot or my friend shop, so i think it will work for me and my budget. thanks for the info and advice though.

Ask elf-loser about the puddle of gear oil that collects inside his rotor on the back.

That might have something to do with the 15' of pinion angle... nah... Or maybe it's the 20 year old seal?? hmm...

I think that seal is from vietnam and charlie fawked it up for you.

well i would never run pinion brakes on the road. just think about it if you are going 50mph it is effectivly turning the pinion brake almost 350 mph which makes for great stopping power but a lot of heat. elfy doesn't have to worry about this because in the 6 months he has had the thing "running" he hasn't driven more than 75 miles and not more than 1-2 miles at a time. On top of this he can only go about 40mph and his compression braking will snap your neck.

same application, only mine runs more often than that.:flipoff2:

I would bet that the seal and pinion wear is probably do to the additional heat generated from the brake pads..This is more likley a problem with vehicles driven on the road than on the trails only. or seals that are 20 years old.I know several folks running them on trail only rigs with no leaky seals or bad pinion bearings..just my 2 cents..:D:

WTF? 35"s and rockwells, what the point:eek:

Here is one thing to keep in mind guys. Everyone who actually RUNS pinion brakes on their rockwells LOVE the results. I haven't talked anyone yet who has been "damn, these pinon brakes suck, I just want to go to wheel brakes". Sure, if you do 95% street driving they aren't for you but if your getting rockwells you probably aren't putting them in a daily driver.

I can't wait to drive mine, I'm looking really forward to it.

word to the g-ride CJ, you will love 'em.

SeeBass- tires are the easiest feakin mod to "do". I just wanted to get the hard stuff outta the way first. The 35's are going soon...

elf,

I'm sure I'll like them. I think i'm gonna put an adjustable proportioning valve in the front and the rear so I can play with the pressures a little bit. I had a minor set back, the front axle fell off the jackstands as I was putting it back under the Jeep and cracked my rotor in a few places, major bummer. Oh well, good thing they had a lifetime warranty from autozone :P

CJ- whoops!, hay what rotors/calipers are you using??? Did you decide to go custom, and build your own brackets??

I ended up going with the setup from Wagoner Machine Shop for no other reason than to save time. Their setup fits awesome. The calipers are a bit smaller than the chevy 1/2ton stuff and fits on the rockwell housing awesome.

not with any of their rockwell stuff on there.

918-341-1722 is there number, talk to Casey, tell him CJ sent you.

I'm gonna take some pictures of the brake setup, if you want I can post them on this thread.

That would be great if you can post them. I emailed them about 5 minutes ago, but I will call them tomorrow. Of course, it would be cool to be able to experiment with different stuff and make everything myself, but with less than 20 days till memorial day, I am considering buying the brake setups.

Ace,

I'm leaving to go on a trip memorial day weekend too, that's why I used their stuff :P
