Is it necessary?

I know that it will center the weight better so the truck will handle better BUT how much better??

Is it a tottal improvement like lower gears and lockers are to rock crawling or just an improvment like using baby wipes :p

Oh, I this is for my 84 4runner thats going to be turned into somthing registered as a 46 willys and look more like a F-toy with all toy drivetrain on propane.

If you aren't going to race it in any established class, then yes, it's worth it. You're only allowed +/- 1" in most sanctions.

All the pro lite, pro2 and pro4 trucks have the engine next to the driver. I've seen pro stadium (tuff truck) guys move them back as far as 24" and still attach trans/xfer cases and run straight axles, so I know it's doable.

In the pro arena class we run they allow 15% of your wheel base, thats for Clear Channel

My buggy has the front part of the Toy frame rails. The motor was pushed back 12'' compared to stock. It was really well balanced this way. It even jumped pretty good for a rockcrawler. Why is this in the desert forum anyways? Sounds like you are building a crawler.:D

That rule was introduced in 2003 or so, and a lot of the old-school guys (Brian Spady, Tom Jones, etc.) had their trucks grandfathered in with much bigger setbacks.

On a 2wd rig it makes a huge difference to move the motor back. On a 4wd rig it is far less important. In fact for hill climbing it would be a disadvantage. Unless you are running the truck at 95% of its capabilities with regards to acceleration/cornering/braking all the time then I'd say its a wash on a 4wd and not worth the effort. Just my two cents...
