My buddy is fabing up a bumper for his rig at my place. He needs to do some serious cuts on some 2x6x.250 stock. We tried a sawzall and it was pretty slow going and the blades (not cheap) were taking a beating. We can get the kind of clean cut we are looking for with a torch. Don't have a band saw. Anybody have a good idea?

Gotta chop saw...gotta good chop saw as a matter of fact. Doesn't work to make a 14" diagonal cut. Thanks though

if you cutting some angles be careful, with a chop saw, youll have to modify the saw to handle the angles...... loosing your ability to clamp the material.......... o would torch it as clean as you can and grind the rest....

Yeah, that exactly what he was doing. Using little stubby blades and only cutting one side at a time. It was still pretty dang slow and blades weren't hold up to well.

I'd go borrow my buddy's horizontal band saw but you don't know him so that's no help.:flipoff2:

Go rent a PLasma cutter. That is the only thing that would work with what you got to work on.

Circular saw with the fiberglass metal cutting blades. Haven't found anything yet I can't cut with it. And for smaller jobs, the angle grinder with 4 1/2" blades, same but smaller.

Go to a local shop and have them cut it the right way. Prolly costs less than the $ you already spent on blades :)

clarify... you do, or you don't have access to a torch???

I used to torch cut everything........... just use a straight-edge
for a guide...... then grind.... no worries.....

I know you said no band saw, but those HF units are so cheap and they are very nice to have. Just drop the boom, have a drink, smoke, work on something else, whatever, and it cuts itself off when done. I love mine, only $159 IIRC.

Just wanted to say thanks for all the suggestions guys. Tried using a piece of angle as a heat sink/straight edge tonight with lots of pre heat and it works very well. Thanks again.

I just made a bumper out of 2x4x.25 & used a grinder with 4.5" cutoff wheels to cut the angles(55*). Used less than 2 wheels at 1.98ea. Took like 5 mins a side. Torch & a piece of angle iron as a straight edge works good to.

It's kinda late but I have had good luck with a circular saw with the metal cutting blades. They are only like $3 each. I use a piece of L for a guide and cut away!! I even cut a 12X16 1/2 down to 12x10 and it took about 1/2 a blade.

i will put my own personal seal of approval on that harbor freight saw!! it has paid for itself thousands of times over!! even after the motor burnt up after about a year. it got replaced with a bigger HF motor and some different sized pullies and now it cuts like a demon!! if i had a plasma though.......:D :D :flipoff2:
