What size tubing would you recommend for a cage for my YJ? And DOM I would assume?

Most everyone goes with 1.75"x0.120" DOM. You'll be plenty safe with that, buddy.

I used 1.5". A know a few that kept the stock cage in the back and used 2"x.120 DOM to make a complete cage.

1.75"x0.120" DOM

Best combination of strength and not using your interior space up with big tubing.

You may find a combination of sizes works best depending on what is mounted to the cage, i.e. seats, etc. Mine is mostly 1.75 x .120 DOM, however the seat mount is 1.25, and the gusseting is 1". DOM is not absolutely necessary, HREW is found more often than you think in some nice stuff out there!

Hey, what is everyone using on their cages as brackets to bolt into stock body locations? I would imagine fabbing up some plate wouldn't be too hard, unless some vendor's got some neat kit. anyone know of one?

I'm building mine from scratch out of 1.75" .120 HREW. DOM is hard to get here and expensive. I was going to use .140 wall, but it was too much of a hassle to get. The guy that is building it has built several comp buggies out of 1.5 .120 hrew and they have held up to all kinds of abuse.

Ross, I can get 1.5x.120 DOM for 3.25 a foot and 1.75x.120 for 4.25 a foot... delivered free next day.

is HREW that much weaker? Cuz I've notice3d it inasanely cheaper. My plan is going to end up a lot like Poison spyders, so it's pretty extensive, will HREW work?

But again, what are you using to mount it to your body? just some cut up plates you have laying around with some holes drilled?

tommy gave me the option of DOM too, but HREW is about half that, I'm convinced it will be more than enough for what I need.

I might need you to get me some to build seat ties ins when I get some real seats though, hopefully that will be the only part of the cage that is unfinished :smokin:

We're talking about $300 worth of tube vs. $150 worth of tube, right? It's the labor that is expensive (or your time, if you're bending/fabbing yourself). Why not go DOM for 4 or 5 times the strength?

because i've seen buggies built out of 1.5 .120 HREW that have been wheeled for two or more seasons in WEROCK and has rolled more times that the driver can ever hope to remember and the cage has suffered no damage that requires repair or replacement. Also, from what I understand DOM is not 4 or 5 times stronger.

as for mounting the cage to the body, just use some 4x4 or 6x6 plate and bolt it to the tube, pretty simple really. Look at the factory mounting point for the rear part of the cage on the wheel wells and you'll see what i'm talking about.

OK, I'm wrong...I went and looked and at 1.75" .120 wall tubing, the DOM is around twice as strong as HREW, not 4 to 5 times like I stated. My bad memory.

Also keep in mind that rolling a buggy in a comp is not near as hard as rolling a Jeep on the street at street speeds, and your street Jeep is likely to weigh much more than a comp buggy, thus stressing the cage more.

Just some thoughts.

A very good point for a daily driver, mine has since been retired to trail only so in my case, its not as important. also, i'd rather have a full cage out of HREW than just the factory cage, but thats just what works for me.

DOM or HREW at 1.75 x .120 will be fine.

your friends wont give you shit for building it out of DOM though:D
