: Installing the inner C's

I narrowed a HP D44 for the front of my XJ. All the mounts are done and I'm ready to install the inner C's.

I'm interested in how you guys set-up the C's for proper caster/camber angles.

Here's what I have in mind...

Level the housing with the pinion pointing up 16 degrees(11 degrees pinion angle plus 5 degrees for caster).

Install the C's using a level on the lower balljoint to get both sides level(pass side with a slight bit more caster, 1/4 to 1/2 degree, to compensate for road crown like a factory set-up).

Mount the knuckles and use a level on the spindle surface to set camber to 0 degrees.

Then weld them on...

Thanks in advance for your input and many thanks to Jeff for the use of his axle jig to set-up the mounts and such...

I would just use an angle finder instead of a level.........

I figured a level might be more accuate. I plan on checking with an angle finder also....

I don't think you need to worry about camber since it is already designed in from the factory - the C's and the knuckles have the camber.

You won't be able to bend the C's to get camber anyway since they are a tight press fit on the axle tubes.

I would set the pinion angle that you want, put all the weight of the rig on the axle so you are positive that you have the correct pinion angle, and then set your C's to 5* (if that is how much you want) and weld them up. This way you know you are getting your 5* of caster and not end up with something different when you finally set the vehicle weight on the houising.

I already know how much pinon angle is needed.

From what I have heard it is possible to have the inner c slightly cocked on the tube and get camber wrong. This is why I wanted to check camber.

My XJ will be my DD for another year or so and I'm trying to set the angles as perfect as possible with the tools I have....

Check it 3 times weld it once... :D
