Im getting ready to buy some gears. for my toyota diffs I have a preformance 22rte Im getting built with a supra turbo on it. I am putting it into my 85 4runner I have 33's right now and I have bought dual cases with 4.7 gears for one of the cases. I have the turbo 5 speed tranny. so Here is my question I havent done too much hardcore crawling. I mainly like playing in the dirt and hill climbs etc. I havent got it running yet, so Im trying to figure out what ring and pinion to buy. I have 4.10's now and when I had the 22re in it the thing sucked up hills and on freeways.( I took my 4 runner from the bay area to tahoe for snowboarding. I want good free way speed especially up hills. I may eventually want to go with bigger tires like 35-38 some where in that rancge. I hate to buy gears twice, so what do you all think. I know this is a stupid newb question Im sorry that is why I posted in te newb se ction. I know everyone says 4.88's for 33's and 5.29's for bigger tires, but latly Ive been seing people say that there 529's suck on the freee way. help people! if it matters I have 6 inch alcan springs and I am planing on chevies with possibly a buggy spring in the rear, and probably lift blocks or add a leafs to leve it out

I've run 4.10's, 5.29's, 4.56's, and now 4.88's over the years in my truck. My 3.0 V6 isn't much more powerful, if at all than your 22rte. Proper gearing should be determined by actual tire size rather than stated tire size.
For a couple of years I ran 33" BFG's w/ 5.29's and didn't like it. It revved too high for my taste, and the speedo read 80 mph when actual speed was 67 mph. However the BFG's were not a true 33" tire, they were closer to 31.5".
I currently run 35" MTR's w/ 4.88's. Per my GPS, when the speedo reads 70 mph actual speed is 72 mph. The MTR's are not a true 35" tire, closer to 33.5". This combo works well for me.
Interco (Swampers) run closer to stated tire sizes. So what may work for one brand of tire may be different with another brand. Again, actual O.D. vs. stated O.D.

It is a very good question. Lets say tire is acual heighth and a toyota 5speed has a 16% OD I think.

It is a good question and a well planed out project. lets say tire size is acual height and a toyota 5speed has a 16% OD. With 33s and 4.88s it would turn about 3200 Rs in 4th and 2700 in 5th. With 33s and 5.29s ith would turn about 3500 Rs in 4th and 2950 in 5th.
You got your offroad gearing so I would focus on high way gearing with the r&p. If you don't run on the free way or at 65mph most of the time I would run 5.29s and if you plan on using a larger tire in the future I would go 5.29s. Gears arn't cheap to do alot of trial and error. There is a gear, speed and rpm caculater on Randy's R&P web site. I think the 5th gear on the caculater is a 26% OD and the toy is a 16%? The ideal rpms would be 2500-3200 maybe? Good luck, deep gears and tall beers
I drove 5.29s and 33's for a few months. No problems with it. Was a 91 22re with a 5 speed.

Decide on tire size first.
