: Another take on rocker protection
FIXXXXAH 05-05-2002, 05:01 PM This is how i did my rockers... i had fist size holes in them so i cut them off right below the door, welded in some thick wall 2" square tube...
Overall (http://www3.baylor.edu/~Wes_Hanson/fixxrocker1.jpg)
Front view (http://www3.baylor.edu/~Wes_Hanson/fixxrocker2.jpg)
Closer view of welds (http://www3.baylor.edu/~Wes_Hanson/fixxrocker3.jpg)
Welds underneath to floor (http://www3.baylor.edu/~Wes_Hanson/fixxrocker4.jpg)
Testing.... (http://www3.baylor.edu/~Wes_Hanson/fixxrocker5.jpg)
Im happy with em :D the overhead under there was a PITA though, and having to stop welding when the wind comes up... man i need a shop! :rasta:

wngrog 05-05-2002, 05:34 PM Very Very nice job!!!!
rustyb 05-05-2002, 06:49 PM Looks sweet. I did almost the same thing with 1.5''x3'' rectangular tubing except I didnt extend it out past the original body line. You did a clean job.
Rusty

FIXXXXAH 05-05-2002, 07:33 PM Thanks guys. I kinda dig the way they look pushing out a little bit.

Dave67cruiser 05-05-2002, 10:34 PM Nice job, like your welds, did you tac and then cool or weld in one continuious weld?
goldenarrow 05-05-2002, 11:09 PM i think i saw a mig in the backround bu still a nice job
hey u wanted pictures of my manual tcase conversion give me your email and i will send then asap
Looks good.
That looks like a lot of welding....must have taken a while to do. :D
FIXXXXAH 05-06-2002, 02:15 PM Well, it was more of a weld and cool then tack and cool, i welded it in appr. 3" segments. Well, yeh, there's a mig in the background, if you want to tig that, well the metal isnt clean enough anyway and second it would only take forever, and if you want to run stick on sheetmetal your a dumbass:rasta:
it was a fair amount of welding, but hey, its nice and strong and looks clean with the bead all the way around :D
Matt
Lord Baskerville 05-06-2002, 02:31 PM Very nice....

FIXXXXAH 05-06-2002, 04:13 PM Hmmmm... i think i'll pass on that one....:flipoff2:
crawlin cruiser 05-06-2002, 04:31 PM I like them, what welding method did ya use. I think my sheetmetal it too thin to do that:eek:
FIXXXXAH 05-06-2002, 06:26 PM it was all MIG with .o23 wire. i dont think toyota ever changed the metal thickness? you just have to get her set right, then concentrate most of the heat into the square tube, with little movement, i was using a J pattern, and the heat will draw the weld right up onto the sheet for you. :D

Diesel_Cruiser 05-07-2002, 09:10 AM I hope you don't have a copyright on those rockers :flipoff2:
I am welding in new sheetmetal to the body, already made new rocker panels out of 2mm steel and then saw your post, cut the sheet metal rigth out, and welded in some beefy 60mm-60mm-4mm square tubing.
Thanx for the idea! I have to stop browsing this board, I'm doing everything double! :D
Her's a pic of how i was going to do it before i read your post, as you can see the new metal was already tacked in place, i'm holding the square tubing i am going to weld in it's a little bit beefier than the sheet metal :flipoff2:

FIXXXXAH 05-08-2002, 07:50 PM RIght On, but im sorry, i do have a copyright to them. it's gonna be about... $53.03 in royalties. PM me for my mailing address:flipoff2: Nice job on running the rears back into the body! Diggin' it. Rust sucks man, i know it. I fit up the new diamond plate bed today, need to get done with the metal so i can paint!
Matt:smokin:
P.S. you can just pay the royalties in  :D
Diesel_Cruiser 05-09-2002, 01:55 AM :D Welln let's see, $53.03, shipping from Belgium included, that will be a total of 1.5 beers  I'll send them your way as soon as possible.:flipoff2:
I've been busy all week welding in the rear bed, fenderwells and quarterpanels. And like you said, welding overhead was a PITA, even very painfull at times :D , I think I'll need to drink a lot of   to ease the pain.:D
Christof
FIXXXXAH 05-09-2002, 04:23 PM Wow. thats strangly similar to what im doing right now... today i fitted up the new bed...
isnt bodywork FUN?
so close, so close... :D
Matt
Diesel_Cruiser 05-10-2002, 12:53 AM Bodywork is a lot of fun, i think i am grinding with grinding wheel # 231 since i've started this buildup :-), burned myself with welding splatter a thousand times, and had to recut every piece ten times until the SOB would fit.
Ran into a weird problem, check out another thread i started
http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=52051
The rear fenders are 3 cm (1") higher in the back than in the front, and i have no idea what i've done wrong, well on the plusside I'll never have pools of water in my tub again :flipoff2:
