Saw it in the bed of an old pick-up at a government institution were . . . picture taking is not welcome.
Rear axle, 5 on 5.5 bolt pattern, drum brakes, 12 bolts on the cover (dana axle I guess), looked like a big Dana 35 (ovalish, but not a C clip, is was backing plate style) no drain/fill hole in the cover, that is on the right hand side of the cast center section near the low pinion. The interesting thing was that its set up for a triangulated 4 link from the factory, it had bushings for the upper links cast into the top of cetner section.
Worth having?

Sounds like a 10 or 12 bolt out of a Chevelle, or late Monte Carlo or something along those lines. Yunk! Not worth the powder to blow to hell.

did it have a removable 3rd like a 9" in addition to the rear cover? if it was for sure not c-clip it sounds like an oddball Eaton.

12 bolt, saw a similar one, but narrowed under my neighbor's drag car. I told him that axle wouldn't last too long under my truck, but it's working well for him. The link mounts on top are what caught my attention.

Yep sounds like a 12 out of a car. As for them not holding up....Seem to do fine behind Big blocks. Pontiac, Chevy, Buick and Olds Sold 100's of thousands of cars with that axle and MANY had big block high HP engines. My 70 Pontiac LeMans Sport Convert (Same body as GTO) has that set up. Healthy axle shafts are available from anywhere. Other than it being a C-Clip I would say it's stronger than a D44 and as strong as a Ford 9. It will have a 8 7/8's ring gear.
