That's what I normally do as well. But I'm building up from a short block and need to at least get them close...
A couple of guys from Corral.net helped me out last night. Here's what they said for all of you that will be searching for this topic.
To adjust the intake valve...
Rotate the motor in it's normal direction until the exhaust valve is at it's lowest point. Then tighten the intake valve to "zero lash". Basically this is when you can take the rod and pull it up and it doesn't move. You will always (unless you completely over-tightened) be able to move the rod down. That's the hydraulic lifter giving a little. So just till there is no upward movement. Then give it from 1/4 to 1/2 turn more to set the lifter pre-load. You are finished with that valve.
To adjust the exhaust valve...
Rotate the motor in it's normal direction until the intake is at it's highest point. Then use the same steps as above to tighten the rocker and set the pre-load.
I don't know if this works or not as I haven't fired the motor yet. But my fingers are crossed!
