Hey,
I'm trying to fix my smog issues. So I was up on the DMV website and it stated, as everybody knows, all 73 and older vehicles are SMOG exempt.
Then on another page, it stated that all vehicles must get a smog check under a number of conditions, including:
First time it's being registered from out of state
When the title is being transfered
So, let's say I were to take all my stuff off of my 75 Bronco and put them on a 73 Bronco that I just bought (wink wink) would I have to get a smog check?

So what determines the year of the truck (technically).
If I were to buy a 72 frame and put a 75 body on it, what year is it?
My guess is it would be the frame. If that's the case, then what's the official way to reattach the VIN plate?

-Jack they mainly look at the vin plate which is attatched to the body usually. so your f'ed. cuz most people plate the frame where the numbe ris stamped do to a STRES crack. and you attatch the vin plate just as it was on the original. ie if it had pop rivits use pop rivits, if it used screws use screws! jiMMy

i kinda wondered about this myself. For some strange reason my girlfriend wants a huge rockcrawler VW beetle, and i'm thinkin that if i buy her a mid 60s bug and register it, then swap the body onto a jeep or sammy frame and running gear, whats to stop me from just renewing the registration every year and just callin it a 67 or whatever bug? how would they ever know since you never have to bring it in, and if you get pulled over, technically its still a bug in shape.

my girlfriend wants a huge rockcrawler VW beetle,
I'll see if I can find some pictures of my buddies rig. It's a Baja Bug on an S-10 frame with 35's. Looks VERY clean.

The only people that can legaly reattach a Vin plate is the CHP. You cant simply use pop rivits because if they nail you they will impound your junk and a bunch of other bad crap will happen.:skull:

In california it goes by the frame.
My understanding is that it is OK to reatach the vin plate yourself, and if you put the 75 body on the 72 frame you are required to go to the DMV and fill out their a statement of facts form documenting the body swap. After you do this they will instruct you or at least they instructed me to put all of the Vin numbers from the original vehicle in their original location on the donor body and remove all the Vins from the donor body. That is kinda hard to do with a sticker but it implys that you can do it yourself.

Does anybody with an EB know where the VIN stamp is on the frame?
