My neighbor is moving and has an 87 sammi. She might be selling it. I believe it has a blown motor. If the price is right i'm thinking of buying it and making it into a trail only rigt and saving paint on my prescious yota :D .
Anyways, I was thinking of putting toy axles on it and toyota motor/tranny. Is this a good choise or what do you recommend.

Toy axles seem to be the way to go for many people. A 22r would have more than enough power. You might need to either put on a body lift or redo the tunnel though (I'm not sure on this though).

Toy axles good. No need for Toy motor. Just pick up a 1.6L 16V from a Sidekick/Tracker. Way less hassle and pleanty of power with the right gearing.

Go for it - you will be 'The Man' :grinpimp:
While yer at it, stretch the wheelbase & go with dual cases!

I am looking at building a buggy right now and debating powertrains. I did some calculations here. (http://www.azrockcrawler.com/_images/projectx/projectx.html) . Pay attention to the gear ratios in high range since most of the 1.6 and 22re options have no t-case reduction in high range. It looks to me like the 22RE might be a great all around engine. Low torque, good horsepower, and your low gears are all bolt on. Quite honestly I think your decision may boil down to what is avalaible to you. If you pick up a Toy parts truck for the axles you might as well use the rest of the stuff if it's good, same deal if you have access to a good 1.6. Don't forget you could always pop another 1.3 in there if you don't need/want super low gears. Toss a 6:1 and some 33's and go to town :D

This is what I figure. Since the engine is blown, it's going to need to be replaced or rebuilt. Given that, it's pretty much run what you can get your hands on.
There's always the debate over Toy axles or D44's. I will most likely go with Toy axles because most of the people I know run Toys.
