my 97 12v dodge for an 04 chevy 6.0HD. anything to watch for with the chevy trucks? any way to get better mileage? i read some stuff about the "tune". i dont tow much, just a 25' travel trailer so dont flame me for gettin rid of my pile of shit dodge, im sick of fixing it. the new chevy seems to be very clean and in nice shape. what are the weak links in this truck, i already know what they were in the dodge.........

just as a tow rig? Cant do too too much to the 6.0's as far as power, I think Superchips makes one thats pretty decent and firms up shifts as well.
couple things to watch for/potential problems:
-rear axle seals, sucks cause when they start to leak, it soaks the parking brake and makes the parking brake worthless.
-instrument clustes, theyre kinda known for screwing up, sticking the needles in one position etc.
-transfer case pump rubbing issues. The NP261's and 263's have been known to have problems with the retaining clip falling off the pump shaft. This causes the pump to wobble eccentrically and slowly rubs a hole in the case. When the hole wears thru, it slowly drains the transfer case and eats the transfer case. Just keep an eye on it, underneath the truck, if you see lots of fluid over the underside of the body stop driivng the truck and check over the rear half of the transfer case for a small hole.
-front wheel bearings. Jack the truck up and kinda "hug" the front wheels and try to wiggle them forward and back to check for play. Be sure to keep the balljoints greased. People sometimes complain about balljoints on these trucks, but if you keep them greased you shouldnt have any problems.
-steering intermediate shafts. sometimes they start clunking and you can feel it in the steering wheel when you turn. Not a problem or danger or anything, its just annoying to the driver. You can buy re-grease kits at the dealer for like 15 bucks. Take the shaft out and grease it WELL. Move the shaft in and out MANY times and keep greaseing it to be sure ALL the air bubbles are out. If you grease it correctly, it will stay "clunk free" for a long time. Mine started clunking at like 8k miles, I regreased it and 50k miles now it is still clunk free. Just be sure DONT spin or turn the steering wheel when you remove the intermediate shaft. If you spin it without the intermediate shaft you can break the clockspring and your steering wheel audio, etc controls wont work and the airbag wont work/airbag light will come on.
I know it seems like a lot of problems, but all in all the chevys are pretty good generally IMO. I just want to be honest and give you a real life examples of "potential" problems; there is no such thing as a perfect trobule free truck. I have 50k miles of abuse and towing etc and ive replaced each rear axle seal, and the ECM crapped out at 12,000 miles. Other than that its been 100% trouble free. My memory seat is retarded (goes to a different position each time you press the 'memory recall' button) and the fuel tank is small, but otherwise I have no complaints. Your luck may vary :)

Well, good thing you dumped that troublesome Dodge; sounds like you won't have any nagging little problems with the Chev. At least now you have the correct sized glass!

I have an 02 2500HD with the 6.0 and 4.10s.. I blew a rear axle seal at about 30k, good since, now 80k. Also I had one replaced and have heard the exhaust manifolds may leak, over time, not sure on the newer ones. I get 14mpg, and about 8/9ish when towing the jeep on a 2250lbs trailer, I dont have a chip or anything.

Going by your sig it may not matter what truck you buy. "If it aint broke fix it till it is" :flipoff2:
I'm not about to get into a pissing match, but you traded one truck that you claim to have had many problems with for a truck that you need to ask about what problems you may end up with?? You should have done some homework before the trade. I know it is too late now to change your mind so hopefully you got a good truck and get many trouble free miles out of it.
