ok, i am about to buy a 81 f150 4x4, and it has a TTB d44, i want to swap in a solid axle..

i was wonder if i were to find a 78-79 d44 case, would i be able to swap the TBB knuckles and everything onto it? what about the R&P?

Your better off finding a straight axle Dana 44 and swapping it in. You can do it cheap or you can do right. Search, you'll find this is a very common swap. There is another forum that goes into this a little more... search bigbronco....

As for what parts swap, as always I've a chart :grinpimp:

D60

Why swap a 44 for a 44? It isn't stronger...
(well unless you throw all the chromo bling at it, but then you've just spent the same $$$ that coulda gotten you the 60)

pretty sure a 60 will cost more than a 44, especially if all i needed was a passenger side inner and the solid case.....

So what are your reasons for swapping out the TTB? It can be made to work fine running 35's...

I have. superior axles and CTM's are about $700. a junkyard 60 costs about as much as a rebuilt 44 with chromo shafts

no matter what anyone says a ttb setup will never be able to handle tires as well as a solid axle without some serious $$$ thrown at it. you may as well swap.

Please explain then how the TTB on my little BII handles 35x12.50s fine when I've thrown but maybe $600 or so at it :flipoff2:

Yeah, a built D44 may be close to the same as a stock 60, but the difference is, now you're done. No further upgrades available. When you start busting R&Ps and chromo shafts, now you'll have to spend yet ANOTHER grand to do the 60 swap you should've done in the 1st place.

A D44 axle WITHOUT such upgrades is pointless to swap in (unless you want a nosebleed lift, then the steering geometry would easier to set up, but you only need 4" lift for 35s).

actually, i wasn't planning to lift the truck at all for 35's....it will clear them fine on the back with no lift and the front i was going to graft in the fender opening from a set of bedsides since they are bigger....MIGHT have got leveling coils....

BUT, the loan for the truck fell through, so i am not sure if it will even still be there when i have the $.....

Who lied to you?

No one lied to me... You want a more thorough price breakdown? Maybe someone lied to you?

JY HP D44 axle = $200 (typical)
Chromo shafts & CTMs = $700 (using tsmall07's figure, I usually see 'em far higher than that)
Thats $900 right there (and I'm probably forgetting some other little things that may need upgrading, too).
This equals an axle that is fully upgraded and will handle 38" tires.

JY D60 can often be had for $1000 (far cheaper if you buy a parts truck, then sell off what you don't need)
Stock D60 can handle the same 38" tires, but can be easily upgraded to handle 44s if you wanted...

You want the dead-end solution? or the one that still has upgrade options?

- my little brothers 89 f150 has 38.5 boggers and has only tweeked it after a few jumps -it has a rancho 4 " ( spacers makes 6 ) and a 2 " body lift - with some fender trimming - the rancho arms broke twice - and we welded some braces to the ttb - 5.13 and wot ---
