Diesel_Cruiser 05-06-2002, 02:44 AM Since there are a lot of Nissan Patrol's in australia you guys can probably help me out.
I know a guy who has 5 Nissan Patrol's 3300 Turbo Diesel wich he is parting out. I am interested in the front disc brake setup. Is it possible to do a front disc brake swap on my 1980 Bj40 with Patrol brake parts?
Christof
coiledbj42 05-06-2002, 03:14 AM not that I know of.
Most people over here just use 60 series discs on the 40 series.
Is it a GQ or MQ Nissan Patrol?
If it is a GQ get the complete diff, disc to disc and put it in the cruiser. The cv's are stronger than cruiser ones.
BJ should be able to add more.
Ozfj40 05-06-2002, 03:24 AM i've seen complete diff swaps from a GQ patrol - it's probably the easiest way to go especially if he is parting out a couple of Nissan's.
As for swapping just brakes, i guess it's possible, but as coiled said just go for 60 series discs ;)
Diesel_Cruiser 05-06-2002, 04:32 AM I live in Belgium, 60 series Land Cruisers are very rare over here, so are mini trucks,... I haven't been able to find one that's been parted out.
As for the patrol never heard of the GQ or MQ series, guess they use other names over here in Europe.
Christof.
Diesel_Cruiser 05-06-2002, 04:43 AM Scanned a pic of what type of Patorl it is, don't know myself. All I know it's 3300 Turbo diesel, disc front, drum rear, power steering.

Now when patrols are discussed, I found some cool patrols flexing real good:)

coiledbj42 05-06-2002, 01:12 PM The patrol in the first pics is an MQ, they are fairly crappy!
The second set of pics in Nick Mannell's GU Patrol. If you can get some diffs out of them, go for it! CV's are big!
Here is a pic of a GQ

Does it coast a fortune to get a GU flex like Nick Mannells?
wendleburger 05-07-2002, 06:03 PM Does it coast a fortune to get a GU flex like Nick Mannells?
Rear flex on GQ & GU patrols is awesoe straight from the factory, but the front end gets alot of bind in the radius arms, the radius arms can be swapped out & replaced with an upper & lower arm 5-link setup like NIck's. Then you get real good flex...
MQ diffs are pretty ordinary, weaker than the older G60 units (k60 in the states?)
GQ & especially GU diffs are hell strong 9.25" & 10" in the back of some models...
BJ On Roids 05-07-2002, 07:22 PM hey coled, im not a big nissan fan ;)
diesel, dude, havea close look yourself, you'll pretty quickly realise its a futile efort, the turbo may be able to be adapted to your truck, try and sting one of them off him
the knuckles are a different size, and there knuckles are cast and are a one-piece unit, (includes the steering arm) the CVs are as weak or weaker than your cruiser (in an mq) big arguments between GQ and cruiser strength here in Oz, so i wont even go there (your cruiser steering arm bolts on)
if you are handy you could machine it up to fit, i mean the stud pattern is right, the knuckle from your drums (could) be re-utilised, and machine a bracket to hole the caliper and support the rotor from the back of your existing hub...maybe, in my mind i see this as being doable, theng et an adapter from the nissan caliper to yourr toyota brake (do this at the flexi line)
for example, put flexi lin all the way to the calipers, run a nissan fitting out one side of the caliper, and run a toyota fitting on the fixed end of the flexi line, a hydraulics or brake shop can do this relatively cheaply like $25 Oz)
ive never heard of it done here mainly cause, cruisers are very common and have better quality components to start with, look at parts availability, if these are COMMON, and heaps more so than your cruiser, look at swapping in the complete power steering system and front end........ if you can always get parts cheap, there shouldnt be a worry, if they are rare, obviously dont do it..................
over here they are badged as an MQ
the GU (big gold coloured wagon) has a 5 link front and i'll bet any money the back is far from stock, some fool, reckons they flex that good from factory
mate lay down the crack pipe, ALL the ones that flex have A-frame rears, cast your head under the back, it looks neat, but thats an A-frame mate........so yeah, otherwise they just have thier hands on it:smokin:
the a-frame is a simple and relatively cheap conversion
the front five link is available from calbah for around the $2500 mark supplied.
must have a shop to fit it though, includes welding and other things
wendleburger 05-07-2002, 10:04 PM BJ on Roids:
A-frame rear ends are cool, but Nick Mannells truck don't have one

Now where did I lay that crack pipe?? ;)
coiledbj42 05-08-2002, 01:04 AM BJ,
I agree that Manell has a stock rear end in his. Stock Nissan rear ends flex up real good. You should see Fergos in action! Works real good.
The fronts arent the best cause of the stupid radius arms.
BJ On Roids 05-09-2002, 02:56 PM STOCK REAR END?
please, tell me THAT panhard rod came that flat with his 8" coil lift? id say he's got it back to flat, if you watch the nissans with the true 'stock' rear suspension and only have lifted coils, the rear moves out from underneath the car so much on one side and then right out on the other, when flexing due to the acute angle that the panhard rod is on, and the trailing arms, are always modified, either lengthened or ridgebacked, to offer more protection, and move the diff back to the standard location in the arch.
with lifting coils, the lift makes the diff move down (from the body) but also Toward the centre of the vehicle, unless they've tried to correct it.........lots of places try lots of different stuff to correct it.
now, i think you left the crack pipe at my house wendle dude, where you at anyways? who are you?
and i stand corrected he has a "factory" rear suspension in that
so factory it hurts ;) but yeah, they flex ok with the stock rear (same as 80 series)
edit: yes i am wrong.....
wendleburger 05-09-2002, 05:43 PM That panhard rod is on the stock mounts, it only looks flat cause the RHS is compressed up so far. But yeah it is heaps longer & once you go past about 3" lift longer upper arms are a must to stop everything tucking forward. Lower arms are long enough (longer than 80 series) but are as weak as piss..
:smokin:
BJ On Roids 05-09-2002, 06:24 PM cool cool, mr wendle, now where you at?
who are ya?
and coiled.......how come rod fergo doesnt want to enter the TTc this year?
seen me and backed off hey?? ;)
BAHAHAHA
ph34r my elite 35" BFG mud terrains :flipoff2:
soon boggers, oh....so soon:vader2:
wendleburger 05-09-2002, 08:49 PM BJ....
Remember Slartibartfast from Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy?
"My name is not important"
You'll work it out eventually, you know me.. :)
I think we have gone off topic a touch now, this is a landcruiser forum, from memory...
Don't use the MK/MQ axles they are dumb...
If you can get GQ/GU or 60/75/80etc Toyotas at the right price go for it.... But if those trucks aren't plentiful where you are, then you're still not gonna have much fun getting parts, so you might as well go to Dana's or something...
What are the common 4x4's in Belgium, anyways?
BJ On Roids 05-09-2002, 10:24 PM actually i have read the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy and i think it was douglas adams?
im a big fan of his works!!
but being knowledgeable like that and secretive my guess is you are OLD
some OLD DUDE, probly was on GS
hmmmmmmm :smokin:
im onto you old skool
Diesel_Cruiser 05-10-2002, 12:36 AM Common 4x4's in Belgium are offcourse Toyota's :D , lot's of Nissan Patrol's, Range rovers, Land rovers, Hyundai Rocky, Suzuki Samurai's, very few Jeeps (mostly grocerygetters) and even a lot of Lada Niva's.
And about those dana axle, i think it's impossible to find them over here, and if I should be lucky enough to find such an axle it would cost a fortune!
Second hand parts for toyota's aren't found easily here in Belgium that's why i was looking at Patrol brake components because they are more available over here. But since patrol part's are crap (so you guys say) compared to Toy parts, I've ruled them out.
