Rumor has it that the 1701 team finally made it to Mexico, found a beach front hotel and were kickin back with a few margaritas this afternoon.

I ended up having serious equipment issues..the left-front shock hoop blew apart:

http://imageserver4.textamerica.com/user.images.x/71/IMG_537571/_1113/TZ201113141127307.jpg
[ more pics here (http://06baja1000.textamerica.com/?_ctgry=26318)]

I got to the silt beds at Tres Hermanos & when I stopped to air-down the tires I noticed the front drive-shaft hanging down. I re-connected it..drove off & then down aways heard a thunping noise. I got out & discovered the above situation. I then realized why the front drive shaft "came out"..no shocks made the front leaf-spring just bottom out uncontrollably.

I had to drive REAL SLOW to keep it together. The front drive-shaft kept coming out!! (FOUR times I had to re-connect it) I ended up taking off the front yoke & tying up the front drive-shaft.

I made it back to Hwy 3 crossing just before dark, with the Terrible Herbst pre-runner on my tail:

http://imageserver4.textamerica.com/user.images.x/71/IMG_537571/_1113/T520061113173358760.jpg

I got back into Ensenada & was looking for eats ~12 midnight. I did a U-turn & got pulled over by Transito police!! They asked me to follow them to poice-station..it was just a lonely street in a dark neighborhood. Uh-oh, a shakedown. However, the cop was very friendly & when I told him about the above he was sympathetic. I gave him a "race sticker"..& that was it!

My story didn't even compare to what I heard from Hutchins #1001 crew:

http://imageserver4.textamerica.com/user.images.x/71/IMG_537571/_1114/T520061114004836998.jpg

Their pre-runner hit a chase-truck on the Hwy (on their San Felipe to Bay of LA run), rolled..but landed right side up!! Everyone OK. This illustrates how "chase" can be more dangerous than "race". One of the factors in the accident was the narrow hwy.

I'm really not trying to be an ass, but did you really think that would hold together for 1000 offroad miles? just a few small gussets would have made all the difference. and did no-one have a ReadyWelder? it would have been a quick fix.

Why is the 1702 Truck still showing up north of Ensenada? Is Fat City giving the Pirate guys a head start? Or did they start with too many Cerveza's?

I'm also following racers 349 and 302, both of Old Horse Racing. 302's gps tracking isn't working correctly though. :(

I wonder what the hold up was at the starting line. I thought they were supposed to hit the track nearly 2 hours ago?

Has anyone had any luck getting the Weatherman feeds to work?

I saw on another site that there was a jam just after checkpt#1 and that a lot of rigs, including pastrana were stuck there.

With 2wd the only thing that can get through the silt is speed. If they had to slow down, they are screwed.

Gordon is between 3 and 4. The bikes are approaching 6

This just in, Fat city is moving!

Yeah, I believe the time restriction this year (don't know if it changes year to year...) is 43 hours....I mean it is 1000 miles, off road...RG's like 800 HP trophy truck with (I think) around 30 inches of travel front and rear AVERAGED about 53 mph....imagine how slow the average of a Cherokee or a VW Bug must be and how long it takes to traverse 1000 miles at that speed...Its not like they're racing on pavement...in fact I bet the attrition rate is well above 50% for this race...

here you go..found the info..

The DIRTsports Class 11 Elf charity car did not get finished until early this morning. Chris Corbett and crew finally got it to Tech Inspection at 6:00am. They were bumped to a Sportsman Class (1400) because their bumpers are not to SCORE code. They are trying to petition to race in Class 11 with the rest of the 11 cars. The racing class 11 field is with them on this; we will keep you posted on what SCORE decides.

The DIRTsports Class 11 charity car was allowed to race with fellow Class 11 cars, but will still be qualified as a Sportsman car. The now re-numbered bug, #1471 is being driven by Chris Corbett DIRTsports and Clifton Slay from Poison Spyder Customs. This vehicle is not only racing tha Baja 1000, but it is also racing to raise funds for Cure Autism Now (CAN).

From RCD:

1:30 PM Update
We just got call from checkpoint 2 that the DIRTsports Class 11 is back on the road. It was struck by a Class 1 car last night near Valle de Trinidad and was inoperable until just an hour ago. Both drivers Chris Corbett and Clifton Slay seem to be alive and well.

1:39 PM - The first Wide Open Baja Challenge car #BC16 just arrived at the finish line. Steve and Chris Appleton from Boise, Idaho.

Here's a map showing some race mile markers at the BFG pits, and the checkpoints so y'all can see about where folks are at. The live feed map sucks a big one.

Weatherman hasn't worked all damn day for me, and I've been trying to get it to work since 5:30 this morning. :mad3:

I still can't find any updates on Class 3, and that's getting me down.:( If you find anything, please let me know; I've been looking all day with no luck.

I know that 349 is out, he hit a boobie trap, ripped the coil spring off, and the shock, he made it to the BFG pit apparently on the bumpstop :mad3: , I'm told that 302 is out, but no idea why. I still want to know what's going on with 300 (Moss) and 301 (another Texas team)

3:23 PM - - Craig Christy just reported in. They passed checkpoint 9 at 1:20 and should be at finish line shortly.
3:32 PM - - The #96a quad of Mike Penland just crossed the finish line on his Can-Am. We will get the full details to you shortly from Mike himself.
3:30PM - Chris Corbett reported in that Project ELF is officially out. Chris said the car was working great when they got punted by a Class 1 car and smashed the fender into the tire. This took several hrs to fix and put them behind after starting last off the line.
They made it through check 1 and had to call it at mile marker 113. Despite not finishing they were very happy with the car.
4:00 PM - The finish line is a little crazy right now with many entries pulling in. Check the timing and scoring page for all the finishers. #703 came across for a 1st in class as was #300 for a first in class.
#54a was reported at check 10 and on their way to the finish.

this gets a bit confusing...

Lance is the one who registered. Camo is the one who paid for the Rally Logger (the satelite tracking) Shaffer is the driver of record,

since everyone paid for a different part of the same trip for the same rig, it has 3 different names on 3 different things. the irc tracking just has camo as driver.

but shaffer drove first, lance second, jody everding third, and camo last.

and "sickboy" just called and said they couldn't get any rooms last night and had to sleep in the trucks!!! what a way to go down after finishing such an insaine race.

Holy shit!!!!! That was the most INSANE thing EVAR!!!!! Wow, I am still spun out with no sleep for the past 3 days, still high on adrenaline, and now drunk. :D We had such an awesome time, I can't wait to share our adventure with everyone.

The party is AWN tonight in La Paz. Thanks for the support from everyone who believed in us, and :flipoff2: to all the doubters. :D

Someone asked why the stops... Well some explainations are that there are very fast sections, where we were averaging 75mph. Then there were near rock crawling sections, where we were doing 3mph. Then there was silt (you have no idea till you experience it first hand) and mud/sand. Throw in pit stops, checkpoints, and drivers changes, and that's how/why the speeds can be all over the board.

Ok, back to celebrating!

A friend of mine did that at his first District 37 race. Funny as hell. Get Camo an open face helmet next time.

Sorry if I missed it but any word on how the Williams Bros. did (Donahoe FJ)?

They came by La Purisma (Race Mile 865) in the morning if memory serves. I heard their name announced at the awards but they didn't come on stage and I looked around and didn't see either Nate or John but wasn't the Donahoe one the one that was stolen from Estero Beach?

Chase truck was stolen, I heard nothing about the race truck. The Tacoma broke, no idea about the f-250.

On RDC it was said that the FJ was not raced, instead the Tacoma race truck was run. It broke at rm 77 or so and never got back together. I guess it lost a front spindle.

Chase truck was stolen,

That blows... I hope that wasn't Nate's F-150. I wonder why they didn't roll the FJ?

It was Kreg's 05 Super Duty that was stolen. The FJ isn't done yet.

WOW!! We just rolled into Nevada after leaving LaPaz yesterday at 2:30PM-nonstop to Minden by 9:00PM tonight. This thing is the most greuling event in the world for both the drivers and the chase teams. We chased from Ensenada to LaPaz for our team 1403 sportsman buggy.

Get this-I see Shaffers rig roll by about 5:45 AM somewhere in the fog around mile 550 and they finish minutes behind our Nevada based 1403 buggy that was stranded in the last ten miles of the race for almost two hours. Then to top it off, our rig is up on the podium with Mike's behind it, then Rod Hall rolls up in the H3 from Reno! Like it was meant to be a NV picture!

Awesome stuff overall. Mike wins his first try, we rent our car and finish and win our class! Our experienced team mechanics were in awe that we even finished let alone won the class. I think everyone there felt the same way about all the first-timers that finished.

Enough for now. I do have a podium pic of the rigs on stage, but I haven't slept but 10 hours since Thursday AM so I am off to bed!

The interior is completely gutted.... The non essentials are GONE. The rear doors are gutted. They are merely skins. The trunk is the same. The engine also lost the A/C pump, and put on an electric fan I had layin' around. I can lift this car over a foot off the ground. It is LIGHT.

So what about hotter plugs? Would that wake up the racefuel?

what broke on 1702? was the 2wd a significant problem?

Brett,

we had a bunch of small stuff go wrong - pretty normal for Baja, but our major down times were welding south of San Felipe @ BFG 2, and ripping the resivor off the left front shock near San Felipe. Eric drove the car with the dead shock to Coco's, where Team Pirate / Shaffer lent us a spare shock - VERY COOL! It was a bit different on the mounting so we decided I should run till BFG 3 (Bay of LA) on the dead shock and fix it properly. We then got stuck for hours in the mud - 2wd sucked! We spent a couple of hours at Bay of LA, then got going pretty well - till the fuel pump died. Fixed that.

Finally - we were running way behind 1701, but still had a chance to finish in time, when Eric got back in at Loretto. About 15 minutes in he called in an emergency - car 300ft. off a cliff. It turned out to be Tracy Jordan and freestyle mx'r Kenny Bartram. Eric and his co-dawg Scott (EMT firefighter) decided to stay with them until help arrived (four hours!!!).

Anyway, we knew we were out for all the right reasons. We are just glad Tracy and Kenny are OK!

Congratulations again to the entire Pirate/Shaffer Team - awesome! (And very cool that our axles and gears still won the Baja 1000!!)

More race reports to come...

Congratulations to you guys! I saw the truck that said Tahoe something or an other on it (was exhausted when I saw it) and was wondering what car they were there with, I'm guessing it was yours. Can't wait to see the pictures!
