My uncle gave me a 9" outta his '70 PU this week. I've been planning on using a D-60 w/new ends, axles, and a spool in my Scout (350+ ft/lbs) and go full-width SOA. The 9" will be quite a lot cheaper.
Question is; will a 9" hold up to 38.5s, 5.13s and a spool? New axles are a given. I don't do much rock crawling around here. No big rocks. Lots of mud. Lots of rocky mud. Lots of muddy rocks.

Well, they routinely handle huge amounts of HP in race cars...put 35spline axles in and you'll be fine.

Yup 35 spline spool in a N case will be pleaty strong

Moser makes a 33 splined spool and axles for the 9" so that is close to a 35 splined and alot cheaper. Now that I said that I took a 60 with 9" ends and got 35 splined Moser axles and spent a bit more $ but not that bad it would have cost more to make a 9" 35 splined. the 33 splined should be fine but there is a should there anything can be broken :)

i want to do the opposite. take a 9" housing, put D60 FF ends on it, and have some custom shafts made (or D60 shafts turned down and resplined for the 9" third memeber). does anyone see any problems with this? i already have the 9" housing and 3rd member with 4.56 gears and ARB. thanks! matt
