I,m using 1.50dom with .250 wall for tierod & draglink. Is it ok to weld in threaded inserts with the 1ton TRE's?? Some say it's not safe. This is a DD TJ with 37's.

It's safe, as long as the person doing the welding knows what the hell they're doing.

Mine is that exact setup.

Someone told me that it is illegal to have welded steering components.(FWIW) He was the owner of a 4x4 shop in Iong Island, NY. I think he was pissed cause my truck was better then anything that came out of his cookie cutter shop.

I am running the same steel as you on a fullsize with 38's and have not had a problem.

I think in california its illegal to have welded steering components. We do it all the time, never had any problems, but having a fab shop and the know how helps to. whatever you do make it safe

It all depends on the welder as was said. Another alternative would be to use taps to thread the ends of a smaller tube.

The drag link and tie rod are only as good as the person that puts it together. Granted there are better materials out there than others, however you get the wrong person out there making stuff with the "strongest and the best" and you'll end up with parts that will pretzel and snap at the first hint of a load on them.

With your parts as described I see no problem with running it that way. Now if you were trying to just weld the link into the tube I would have a problem with it (still doable but not smart and takes more time to do right).

No CVC that I have seen restricting it in CA. If you are a competent welder. do it and run it.

Thats what all my steering stuff is/was made of. I havent welded up but I have one of my tie-rods sleaved with 1.75 .120 wall. Very beefy(compaird to factory crap). Why would it not be safe? If the welds are quality, then where is the problem? I bet somone made a bent draglink and it broke. Fakn mall crawlers

IIRC some states have issues with Heims over TRE's also.

My welding ability is highly suspect so I found someone to tap 1.25 DOM-.250 wall with the 7/8x18 threads for my TRE's.I can always find a use for the 1.50 DOM on some other project. Thanks for the input.

What Was The Cost On The 1.50? And Did you get it by mail?

My drag link is 1.25" plain ol' solid bar, drilled and tapped for chevy TRE's.

I would have no reservations doing the same for a tie rod.
