Nope, back in '73 all cars were limited to 55 mph so it wouldn't be safe on the highway...

Yup big gas lines and odd/even days in 73. Four banger scouts were only rated to 45 mph!

My scout has a v8 and it will only do 70. Since yours is a four cylinder you are probably lookin at 35 MPH at best.

You sure it is a Scout II? A Scout III could do it no problem.
I know there was a few Scout IIIs around and they had a turbo built into the 4 cylinder only block that pushed the pistons up into the cylinders for more power and torque.
How you could tell if you had the turbo-ed 4, was when you pulled the PCV valve out, a lot of vapors came out of the engine.
Engine running of coarse.

Baaa haaa haaa.
Rare form tonight.
Not a hard-core off-road question (which this board is about), but hey everyone's a newbie at some time and if your a pirate regular and need to ask a question about something your not familular with... makes sence to start in the forum.
the 4-cyl is a good motor, not a V-8 by any stretch, but if geared properly, and in good running condition, it should be adiquite for freeway speeds.

Sure. They haul ass, but only with 5.38s and 31" tires. Then your only good for 30mph. I don't think a guy like you should be going over 30mph anyway.

Don't listen to these guys. In more IH pure circles the 4 cylinder 73 Scout II is often refered to as the "Corvette Killer" or the "Ferrari's Worst Nightmare." These guys are just trying to throw you off the trail, so they can hunt it down and have it all for themselves. Also rare to the 73 4 cylinder is a super secret govenment carb that gets 40 MPG. Don't foget the it also has tail pipe emissions near 0 and when you drain the oil it's magically turned it into chocolate, so feel free to drink away!! It's the magic fairy of Scouts!!

the 196 ci is a great motor for local roads and awsome for the trails around here . i have one in my 67 800 , but you have a 4spd vs my 3 spd so highway rpm's wont be near as bad . mine bizzes like mad hornets over 60 mph !
after the chevy motor dies on the side of the road the 196 will keep chugging ...good luck with it its not fast but will run for ever . with full synthetic i was getting i was running about 15-18 MPG this summer in the winters up here its drops to about 15 mpg

It's a stout little 196cid 4-cyl that's half of a 392 V8.
With stock gears and tires, it'll push a SII to about 95mph, but you won't set any stoplight drag records.
It'll also average around 18mpg.
Big tires / tall gears will kill any love you might've had for the 196.
OTOH, you can jerk the 196 out and drop a 266/304/345/392 V8 in it's place, and the biggest job is adding the other half of the exhaust in.

x2 of what the nice guy said.
My first Scout, a 1976 had a 196, 4speed close, Dana20 with 3.54's...it would cruise at or around 65-70 until you got to a hill...then it was 55 in 3rd.
I put a 304 in it after the first year of owning it. I tried to kill the 196 but it would not die...

Oh? I gave away a 4 banger with a spun bearing.
The 152 I had was always at full throttle coming off a red light, and I still had people passing me.
