: Lock Right Problems???

hey guys

buddy of mine is having problems with his lock right.

i installed it in his rig 4 months ago (i have installed 4 of these)and it has been fine up until now. all of a sudden he is starting to have problems. the thing bounces and clanks like mad and makes all sorts of racket while turning

this is in a TJ with a 35 (i know, i know :D but its not mine) and he wheels lightly and is easy with the gas. its a 2.5L with 4.10's if that matters

we are going to rip it apart tomorrow night and i was wondering if anyone had any clue on what to look at? i personally have never "UNINSTALLED" one but i think we are going to remove it tomorrow night?

any feedback? (besides the "Junk It and Get a D60!" :D )

anything to look for here??

Maybe stripped side gears??

Thanks

Aren't locrites supposed to do that.

Thats how I knew mine was working.

It's when they don't clank bang and send the rig from lane to lane when you need to tear into them:flipoff2:

You should have seen my XJ porpoising through turns when the locrite was clank banging.

Sounds normal to me. They are just as easy to uninstall as they are to install. If you are positive that there is a problem try checking the tolerances. You may need to change out side gear shims for thicker ones.

I had one go in my YJ 5 or 6 years ago. Cracked a side gear in half. It acted just like you're describing. They warrantied the unit, then about a year later the pinion shaft pin let go and the shaft came out. Bye bye rear end. That's when the 44 w/Detroit went in.

My money says the LR is just fine. Sound to me like he bent an axel shaft. My buds startig doing this a few weeks ago. Jack up the rear and put it gear, let the engine turn it and watch the tire.

A friends 35 did the same thing. I measured the gap at different points along the cluthes and found the carrier was tweaked a little. I dont know if this was that problem or not. We ended up ordering a locker for the front and he ran an open rear.

i have them in a rear Dana 44 and a front dana 27, and they pop once or twice around a turn, do you have any freeplay in you driveline?

I would say it is some freeplay mine will jump like someone just learning to drive a stick going around corners. If I want it to stop I will push the clutch in and it will coast smoothly around the corner. Mine is just in tight slow speed turns noway would I tack it out.:smokin:

Like it was said. If it all looks fine on the inside (no broken pins or worn coupler teeth) then you have a bent carrier, diff hosusing, tube or axle (or all of the above). Any slight misalignment of the coupler teeth due to deformation will prevent it from locking up properly and will crash-bang continually until you (or it) gets sick of it. You can put all kinds of bends in a D35c with relatively easy wheeling.

A buddy of mine just went through this with his lockright.

I think BM is talking "noise" outside the normal realm of a LR, which I have heard.

It kind of sounds like the "normal" noise, but twice as loud, and "constant". Regardless of any minor little throttle input, it makes noise.

What happened on my buddies after we got to looking at it was that the crosspin had actually "wallered" out the hole in the carrier. There was ALOT of play.

We replaced it with an 8.8 :D
