: heater for scout80/800
scout254 11-15-2006, 01:47 AM Of course I had to remove the stock heater in my 80 when I changed the motor and brake system.:flipoff2:
The chevy power booster took up all the room on the drivers fender.:shaking:
My main issue is not having a defroster.....try wheeling in the freezing ass cold when you cant see.:goofball: .... I've been carrying towels with me for the last couple years, that gets tiresome quick.
Yes, the stock defroster vents are still on the dash, and the engine compartment still has the crossover air box for the heater/fresh air.
I have been looking around at the Flex-a-lite Mojave heater (#640)and the Moab heater for the last couple days. The idea that I have been pondering, is to remove the stock glove box and install the heater in that location. Then I could attach both defroster ducts to the newer heater box.
So, has anyone tried one of these aftermarket heaters in a scout80?
NVScouter 11-15-2006, 08:10 AM No but I'm going to plumb one of these in post X-mas to keep my nutz warm too.
http://store.summitracing.com/egnsearch.asp?N=700+115+%2D128255&D=%2D128255
The summit ones are 28K BTU and the Flex-a-Lites are 12K BTU and the Summit ones are $10 less.
All the Summit brand stuff I've bought is top notch and cheaper than the comparison.
BLK Scout 800 11-15-2006, 10:55 AM Search ''marine heater'' or something close to that. When I first got my 800 I wanted more heat so I searched around this site. What I found was marine heaters for less than summit (and others) with 48,000 BTU  That shit will defrost your nuts faster than you can get your beer down.....Oh ya (daiquiri's for you) Brian :blender: LOL

Found some good info here. The Carheart+Steak response was the best though!

that was toast:laughing: as in toasty:D
MochaMike 11-18-2006, 10:08 AM Did you mean passenger side?
My heater motor was toast.
Went to my good parts guy (who looks up stuff in books only) & he found one from a 70s chevy truck I think.
It bolted right in.
My only issue is that it has low BTUs. I need somthing stronger.
scout254 11-18-2006, 10:59 AM 1)Already have a "space heater" that is a little too large that I could install...:shaking:
2)Leaning towards a smaller unit that will be out of the way on the passenger side and hook up to the defrost.
3)Stay in the range of 12,000 to 28,000 btu
4)I was trying to see if anybody hooked one of these styles to their early scout.

Ronnie Scout 11-19-2006, 10:15 AM I put a unit in my 800B that was supposedly for a bus and about 20K BTU's, up in the passenger footwell right below the glovebox. I did not hook it up to the defroster's, though. Wired it up to the stock switch. Keeps passengers toasty.:D
ih4ever 11-19-2006, 10:43 AM come on scout 254 you shouldnt have any problems warming up your scout... your always full of hot air:flipoff2:
assgraf 11-21-2006, 09:30 PM try a V.W. heater there not easy to come by but they are small and easy to work with best of all it needs no water, it uses fuel and they are easy to plumb in, check it out old V.W. bugs also the old vans used these same heaters but they are a little bit larger although easily modified..
Harvester of Sorrow 11-22-2006, 09:05 AM A couple of the buggy guys here in the PNW local area have the Mojave/Summit style of heater.
They swear by them.
I will be putting one of those in my 80 next year. I won't be doing any wheeling this winter it looks like so I am not too concerned with it...if I do go up it will be in early spring so I can live with it for now...
Brandon 11-22-2006, 09:20 AM here is my mojave in my yota, it could easily be modified to run up to the defroster. That thing rated lower than others in numbers but was one of the most powerful heaters I have ever had - no complaints!!

BTW I plan on running the stocker in my 80 - is clearance the only reason your ditching the stocker?
scout254 11-22-2006, 02:39 PM The stock heater box was mounted on the drivers side fender....
No room for it there:shaking:
The orig location outlined.

If I buy the Summit 991102 heater box, I might be able to mount it on the pass fender(move the battery selector) and fab up some ducting. Or just cut out the glove box and mount the heater behind the dash and incorporate the ducting there.:grinpimp:

MochaMike 11-22-2006, 02:49 PM I thought it was passenger side?
scout254 11-22-2006, 02:50 PM nope not on mine, it was a big ugly heater box on the drivers fender.:grinpimp:
This is what is looks like....
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c101/scout254/stuff/PB220001.jpg
Brandon 11-22-2006, 10:01 PM a picture's worth a thousand words. Yep, looks like it won't fit ;)
Good to know, guess I'll either be ditching mine or just sticking with no booster and the vette MC (that setup worked fine in my jeep)
Ronnie Scout 11-24-2006, 11:03 AM I thought it was passenger side?
The early 80's had the heater box on the driver's side...late 80's and all the 800's used passenger side.
scout254 11-26-2006, 11:13 PM Heater setup is almost complete.... used a older SGM model.
Hose routing/new panel over old duct hole. (1/2" copper pipe and brazing works wonders on plumbing. 5/8" radiator hose fits nicely over the copper 1/2" tube. ) Still have to make a panel to cover the right side.
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c101/scout254/stuff/PB260003.jpg
No more glove box, oh well I didn't use it that much anyhow. The glove box door will be put back in place, for heater access.
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c101/scout254/stuff/PB260021.jpg
Custom air box, two outlets for defroster hoses.
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c101/scout254/stuff/PB260020.jpg
Silver defroster tube connects w/o problems.
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c101/scout254/stuff/PB260026-1.jpg
So far it kicks out plenty of heat.... towards passengers feet, and to both defrosters. I probably will add a third tube to run to drivers feet section.

Harvester of Sorrow 11-27-2006, 09:45 AM NICE....!!
I procured a set of defroster ducts this weekend while in Eastern WA...
It will require me to move my tranny temp guage that had filled the drivers side hole...BUT I melted the guage anyway...hahaha:laughing:
Also thank you for showing what is behind the "big box" ducting box on the firewall. I was too afraid to pull mine off...Looks like I will be adding that to my ever growing list of to-do's. With the caddy motor looking so good, that big eye sore needs to go.
What "older unit" is that heater? I hope to be doing this same thing come spring time...
scout254 11-27-2006, 02:41 PM I tried to find more info such as model # and CFM, but couldn't find any good web sites.
I don't know if SGM still makes these.
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c101/scout254/stuff/PB270003.jpg
Old ducting that was removed from the firewall.

Nicely done. I especialy dig the added airflow lines! :flipoff2:
I'll probably do something similar with my 800, as bastard rodents have eaten/pissed away my glovebox liner, and I'm going to fab up a center consol anyways. The 800 has the PS fenderwell heater box as stated above, and it both takes up WAY too much underhood room and the blower is wimpy.
scout254 01-06-2009, 10:33 PM Ok... a couple years have passed and my "newer" heater wasn't good enough....:mad3:
So this is the updated version..... :flipoff2:
Summit Racing #991105
Mojave, 260 cfm, 28,000 BTU with grill front
Cost @ $135.00 w/o freight

scout254 01-06-2009, 10:34 PM All ducts would have to be redone since my stock air box was removed for engine bay clearance.
Thus.... a air control box was made. Two 2" "Flappers" were installed for each defrost outlet, to control each air flow. The 3" outlet would be for the space heating. If need in the future, another 3" outlet could be installed :flipoff2:

The flapper handles are tight enough to turn, and will be adjusted to position according to flow between defrosters.

Just taking my time repairing the scout...:p
Don't have alot of $$ to spend on it.
Looks good, I like the plenum you made. Have to let us know how it works on a raining night.
I've been looking at seat heaters too. I fine I open the cold air by my feet so my side stays a bit cooler, so if I install a heated seat on the pass side that will keep my wife warm. I hope to make out to PnP and see whats inside one of those fancy car seat. If not to much trouble might just do a transplant. Pulling the seat cover is not that hard.
scout254 01-11-2009, 06:44 PM Final assembly :flipoff2: Bling, bling :D

Yeah, I also thought about those, that would add more bling :smokin:
I'll just have to look into how to wire em up :grinpimp:
NVScouter 01-12-2009, 09:14 AM Looking good now clean those damn wires up :flipoff2:
Harvester of Sorrow 01-12-2009, 09:14 AM Nice
ChiScouter 01-12-2009, 01:02 PM This is from a old Winnebago. It had 3 outlets on the top which were the same size as the defroster ducts on a SII. In the winter with a soft top SSII it made it warm enough that I could take my hat off, but not my gloves at highway speeds. At slow speeds it would broil you alive. It was a huge improvment over the stock Scout heater.
Brandon 01-12-2009, 04:35 PM Yeah, I also thought about those, that would add more bling :smokin:

If I ever get a functioning rig I am going to run them for sure, the ones I have seen come with a switch, shouldn't be too hard!

I've seen universal ones for sale where you just pull the seat material in the ass section, and put the pad in put the material back. Hell, you could always buy one of the $10 from wallyworld that doubles as a massager for your wife for your anniversary:flipoff2: Right into the cig lighter for power
blackrider 01-12-2009, 11:56 PM nice job brian......
Brandon 02-14-2009, 10:22 PM bit OT, is that grab bar stock issue?
scout254 02-15-2009, 08:17 AM bit OT, is that grab bar stock issue?
No it wasn't, installed it many moons ago :homer:
Removed it last week, so I can put a crossbar next to the dash when the roll bar goes in.
ChiScouter 02-15-2009, 09:03 PM Mazda MPV minivans have a pancake shaped aux heater under the passenger seat that doesn't take up much space and looks like it would easily be adapted to other rigs. JC Whitney used to have a multitude of aux heaters in different sizes and configurations Toyota 4runners had an aux heater that mounted in the center console. Just a few other options that may be worth looking into

Toyota FJ40s and FJ55s had those aux heaters too IIRC. That Mazda tip is more usefull however, as anything TLC will be hard to get and expensive (or old/rotted and worthless)!
MochaMike 02-16-2009, 02:37 PM You guys & your wimpy heater installs....
Back in the day we used to start a bonfire in the back seat just to keep warm.:homer:
But seriously, who needs a heater with a blower on it when you can just use radiant heat under the floorboards....

binderbound 02-16-2009, 10:04 PM Im just gonna spring for a heated snow mobile suit that I can plug into my 12v source. But, so far, if I dress accordingly, I stay pretty comfortable in my doorless rig.
