: Looking at going Automatic on my Diesel Ranger

So I've got the ranger to a point where it works pretty well and a lot of the kinks are gone. Now I'm thinking about going automatic on the transmission since it's my daily driver and I hate traffic with a clutch.

It's not definite as I'm going through the research right now. I found a flexplate that I can use and If I modify my bellhousing adapter on my 4BT I could bolt up a ford windsor auto tranny to it. I'd need to cut a hole in it just so I could bolt the TC to the flexplate.

I would like to keep my driveline the same length so I dont have to get my high angle rear shaft modified. An E4OD would bolt up and be about the same length correct?

I was looking at the Baumann auto electric tranny control and it looks like a really good product for this swap.

I was also looking at an AOD since it's all mechanical and would be a little easier. It needs to be able to handle like 500ftlbs though.

This is my first time ever looking into an auto for any car so I'm a little scared of the whole thing.

Well I asked some dude on ebay about his flexplate and he says they manufacture them so I would need to somehow rig one up.

So now the trans controller is all set, the flex plate is an issue.

I was looking at shifters and a floor shifter will be feasible no problem.

Now I just gotta see what kind of transmission I should use. Anyone have any good data on how long the E4ODs are? What about an AODE? They will bolt right up to my BW1356 right?

E4OD will bolt in, not sure on length.

I would recommend the Baumann controller.

For strength, I would use the E4OD. They can be built to hold way more than that 4BT will ever put out. That and there are diesel triple disk converters(lower stall) that will bolt in.

Anyone know off the top of their head the imbalance on a cummins flexplate?

a Built AOD could do the task, if you where to do that i would give Art Carr a call or someone equivlent. i think i herd them bragging about being able to tow 16k in Overdrive with there AOD plus a nice wide ratio.

or what i would want to do if i was to go back to an Auto is look into swapping in a 700R4. im not sure what can be done adaptor plate wise, but i bet it can be done.

The adapter plate for a 700R4 can be had easily. The parts to do it are there. I was just concerned about Tcase compatability but I've seen them out of S10 Blazers with drivers drop tcases.

I still need the length of an E4OD vs. ZF. If they are the same or close, I am golden. How about the mount location as well. It would be nice to be able to use the mount I already made instead of having to move it. If ford was cool they would have made them the same.

the E4od is going to be longer by a inch or two, sorry i dont know the exact dimensions.
