what do the letters mean on the back of the alternator where the plug is?

on my stock

(Try to picture where the plug is )

(L) -

(G)-

On the aftermarket

l(E)

-(f) -(n)

the way I marked this is the actual way the plugs look. Am I making any sence or is this all chicken scratch?:smokin:

Hi Dan,
Looks like your original alt was an internal regulator L usually stands for light (idiot light) and not sure on G (possible ground).

Some aftermarket alternators have older cases on them and are converted to internal regulators.

Toyota had a lot of different letters and set ups.

The F is usually Field on an external regulator

I don't have access to my books anymore to tell you the other letters.

If it was converted usually the rebuilder would make it so it hooks up the same way.

Is this on your 79?

Hey Dave, Yes this is from my 79. The markings on the "new " alternator is what Im confused about. The stock has 2 prongs and the aftermarket has 3. Im no electrician so Im quite confused. For the two stock wires going into the stock alternator what wire does what?

Dan

BTW did you see what my truck looks like now? Huge change than when you saw it last:D

Hi Dan,
First, your orig alt.

(L) _
(IG) _

The L comes from a diode that is connected to the brake warning light

The IG wire comes from a fused Ignition source

Aftermarket: Only found plug like this

(E) _

(F) | | (N)

This matches the external reg alt for your year.

The aftermarket alternator is NOT compatible with YOUR FJ. FJ's had two styles of alternator, one 55 amp (yours) has a built in regulator. The other (50 amp) is wired with an external regulator. The one you bought is probably beefed up but unless they gave you an adapter and it has been modified to have an internal regulator it won't work with your harness.

I'll get you some options later (do you like 80 amp?)

My parents have their 50 year anniversary tomorrow so I'll get back as soon as poss
