I know there's a lot of local 'unknown' trails here, let's build a list (without location) of your favorite "nasty' trail, some details, (length, underconstruction, etc. ) and general location (ie. with in 15 miles of BFE)

A couple of mine are

Burning Man, 4-5 + , 2-4 miles, underconstruction/exploration, 5 miles of Golconda

Iron Will (aka parts-n-pieces), 5 + , 1-2 miles, underconstruction, 20 miles of Winnemucca

Dump run, 4-5 , 1/4 mile , testing facility :D , 5 miles of Winnemucca

Has anyone run Steam Shovel in the last few years? It's east of Sand Mountain on Hwy 50. I know they ran a Jeep Jamboree there in '98 or 99'. They turned over a few stock jeeps on that run. After that year they had a quick spring thaw that made the trail go from a class 2/3 to 'oh my god!!' It took my friends and me 10 hrs to make it up the first 2 miles taking the east to west route. We passed the president of the local 4 wheel drive club (running solo)on the way up and told him how bad the trail was. He gave us an unconcerned look and continued down. We saw his Jeep at the local shop and the mechanic said he ripped the exhaust out and trashed a driveshaft. They used to keep the trail pretty mild but that year it was awesome. That was the most fun I've had in a long time. I haven't been in the area in 5 years and was curious if the trail is still in use. I would like to run it again in the "OMG!" state.:smokin:

Did Steamshovel (East to West) in November 06, with 2 other rigs. Trail is now definately not for the stock or slightly modified rigs. Stream was running pretty good and there is two (small) waterfalls that are off-camber (the first has windshield and door glass from a couple of rigs that rolled) and two pretty deep mudholes that are un-avoidable due to narrow tall ledges. We went as far as the Fallon Turn-off sign (Snowing heavy) and ran it back from West to East to our trailers. Gonna do it again in the spring when the snow melts, and then maybe over to Bolivia.
Tried Cottonwood Canyon about 5 years ago from the power plant to bolivia but got hung up at a 12 foot granite rock sticking out of the wash and no-where to anchor (we didn't have the equipment at the time) with the winch to pull our rigs up. Gonna do that again next year in the Samurai also.

i'm getting tired of driving to the Hammers for some good fun. Rubicon & Fordyce are just too run down. Northern/Central Nevada must have some good wheelin'. the last time i went to Vegas down Hwy 95 the terrain looked similar to Johnson Valley area. The area south of Hawthorne looked promissing.

There are heaps of canyons all over Nevada, but someone has to take the time and effort to spend their weekends out exploring and opening new trails in legal areas in order to have a place to play. There is a lot of talk but so far I haven't met anyone in the Reno area who wants to devote that sort of time to developing new trails.

So what exactly are the legal areas? The couple of times I've been to Nevada it looks like there is tons of great potential wheeling, but I don't know what is legal or illegal. Is there some sort of map that shows legal areas to explore or are there some guidelines to follow? I would love to see Nevada get some more trails going, and would donate some of my time to helping out. :cool2:

Over 80% of the land in Nevada is BLM land. Someone needs to cultivate a relationship with the BLM and determine where we are allowed to play. So far Phil Bender from the Hills Angels has done the best job at this, but he is more into historic trips and expedition travel than hardcore rockcrawling. Last I heard it is legal to travel up and down seasonal washes, which is basically the bottom of any canyon (exactly what we are looking for). The friends I have that open trails in other areas travel in their vehicles or on dirt bikes and then switch to foot when they find something that looks promising. GPS coordinates and Google Earth can also come in handy when you are trying to find (or re-find) new trails.

Ya I had heard Nevada was mostly BLM land. So as long as we stay in the seasonal canyons/washes/creekbeds and we tread lightly it should be ok to find new stuff? That is/would be sweet!:smokin: I think as long as this is done responsably it would be great, but I just don't want some fawktards going and fawking shit up because they think they can make a trail any where.

we were just talking about exploring nevada more this spring. i'm going to spend some time on my Garmin GPS Topo software and look for some target areas to go on quads/dirtbike, etc. on topo's if you look for "close" contour lines, that indicates steep sections like canyon walls. my topo software shows a lot of dirt roads, and seasonal washes, etc. i would like to target areas east of reno, to winnemuca, and south towards hawthorne. Maybe even north up towards black rock as well.

i think this kinda situation is going to go over much better in nevada with all the BLM land than in california with more Forestry Service land.

hey Harry -
Web Nazi's had limited my access until recently (counting blessings). Let's wheel anytime. I think I do want to hit that show, but would rather get out. I've been shaking loose bugs with the rig:

- like the fact that I finally have an alternator that works
- Clutch master cylinder is puking fluid in the cab (new one this weekend)
- body mount bolts falling off (went to nyloks)
- getting a heater and soft top

so it's coming along. There's a buncha cool people here too, so I'm happy to get hooked up!

I just said a general location because I know there are a lot of unknown trails out there, that people may or may not want to share. And they may not want to share the location because unfortunately we do have Bozo's in our sport/entertainment that can't respect the trails.

When I lived out in Winnemucca, our club/group was in touch with BLM and was working to GPS the trails we were working on. Also getting in touch with the Ranchers who leased the land to let them know what we were doing. Some of the Ranchers think they control the land they lease, and will run to BLM and complain. Other's are fine with it, as long as you leave section gates as you've found them (open if open, close if closed). Whether or not they realize it, they do have an interest in keeping Public land open too.

The BLM office in Winnemucca basically said as long as we stick to the dry washes, there was no problem. And there's a lot of unexplored potential out there. A lot of it very "hammer" like.

I hear ya on the ranchers who lease property... I've had a few run ins lately with this one particular rancher who is leasing some property. He's been a real asshole and keeps trying to post no tresspassing signs where he has no say in who enters. I have always been respectful around his cattle and have kept the gates as I found them. So to him he can :flipoff2:

There's a lot of places out of Hawthorne. On the back side of Walker Lake there's Gillis, Wildhorse and Ryan Canyons. To the south there's the Excelsior Range, Whiskey Flat, Garfield Flat & Huntoon Valley. On the west side toward Aurora there's countless canyons. These trails range from mild to insane. I enjoy the area not only for the wheeling but because the chances a good that I'll run across an old mine or camp that no one has seen for a hundred years.
