: Input on 1990 f350 axle swap.
larboc@hotmail.com 11-19-2006, 08:39 PM ok. planning the "phase 2" 1-ton swap of some kind this summer and I have started locating parts.
I have decided on a 454, th400, and (hopefully) an np205. I am so far undecided on axles.
Although a chevy 14-bolt/chev dana 60 would be the cat's ass, I'd like to spend my money as wisely as possible.
I have located a kingpin knucle srw 1990? f350 powerstroke at a junkyard. I didn't have time to check out everything (junkyard was closed, not REALLY supposed to be there) but I am going back tommorow to get the dana 60 BOM and a possible price for the whole truck.
Not sure what kind of t-case comes on fords (I am REALLY not a ford guy). But I would need to find a way to put a left drop t-case behind the th400. I am guessing the truck probably has a slip yoke borgwarner t-case in it now that would be junk.
Although it would be an ambitious project for a summer, would it be possible to use a 2wd th400 driving a divorced ford np205 or would that be too retardedly long?
It would be nice if I could use a $400 dana 60/70 matched combo instead of having to find a $700 chevy 60 and $120 14bolt.
I guess my real question here is, is there a sensible way to put a left drop t-case behind a th400?
reuben 11-19-2006, 08:54 PM swap the tubes on the 60. that is what I did.
CSmith 11-19-2006, 10:37 PM Or use a transfer case from an IFS Chevy.
472Scout 11-19-2006, 11:06 PM You should be able to use a driver's drop Ford NP205 ($100-$200) with a short or long GM NP205 32 spline input shaft (around $100-150 new). it's an easy bolt in swap. Which input shaft you need will depend on the length of the TH400 output shaft. Post up the length of your Tranny to TC adapter (flange to flange) and I'll let you know. If your adapter doesn't use the standard round 6 bolt pattern for the transfer case (ala Ford) there are some other options.
wanderer2004 11-20-2006, 10:18 AM I would vote for doing the GM 60/14 route. THe LESS headaches you induce to yourself the more enjoyable the project will be to you. It will also be quicker! There is that saying "Pennywise/pound foolish" trying to save a dime oftentimes costs you hundreds...(experience). If you still want to get the Ford axle my secondary vote is with Reuben, swap the tubes.
Gentry's Garage
larboc@hotmail.com 11-20-2006, 07:35 PM well, he wants $400 for the ford axle. Found some other goodies while I was snooping around though.
Core condidition TH400 32spline with np205 adapter-$90
10 spline female np205 non sye $200 with adapter
366 bigblock used to run for $200
1300 Scout dana 60 (drum brake closed knuckle so screw that) $250
Also happened upon a 5.3 vortec in a newer truck that got destroyed but motor might still be good. didn't ask on it.
at this point I think I am going to concentrate my efforts on finding a k30 around here someplace. If the ford dana 60 had been super cheap I might have jumped on it, but that would be too much work just to save a few bucks.
The price of a decent shape 454 is staggering. I may have to stick with a small block.
thanks for the imput guys. I may still see if he will go lower on the ford d60 though. how long did it take you to swap tubes?
472Scout 11-21-2006, 02:17 AM That doesn't sound like a bad price if is actually a D60. That's also a good price for the TH400 and adapter.
thecarman 11-21-2006, 04:50 AM If that is really a kingpin D60 in that Ford, it should be high-pinion. Those go for $900-$1100 in stock condition around here, so I would be all over it for $400.
472Scout 11-21-2006, 05:27 AM Good point. Ford switched over to balljoint D60's in 1992.
larboc@hotmail.com 11-21-2006, 07:07 AM Definatley a king pin. 1988 ford f350 srw extended cab diesel.
I thought high pininon was only 78-79?!?!?
Didn't even bother to look at the pinion location. hmmm, may have to grab it for resale.
Mechanos 11-21-2006, 07:21 AM ...1300 Scout dana 60 (drum brake closed knuckle so screw that) $250...

You sure about that???? :flipoff2:
larboc@hotmail.com 11-21-2006, 08:00 AM No, not sure it was a 60. thinking back I supposed it must have been a 44 the pumpkin was .5 underground and the junkyard owner said it was the only other 60 he had.
Anyway, I happend to remember I've got an old 1978 mecury with a 460 that is a parts car. As much as I hate to admit it, I am thinking about putting the 460 and a c6 or AOD in. It would simplify the left drop np205 installation and save ALOT of money because I could use the $400 dana 60 and other cheap ford parts. I might have to go do some horse trading today. wish me luck.
Hope a 60 will fit in the back of an s10 ok. :shaking:
Mechanos 11-21-2006, 08:44 AM No, not sure it was a 60. thinking back I supposed it must have been a 44 the pumpkin was .5 underground and the junkyard owner said it was the only other 60 he had....
C'mon.... you call yourself an IH man. You ought to know that there was a D60 offered in any Scout and there ain't no such thing as a 1300 Scout (except the ones that prance happily along with the pink unicorns.... but those don't count).
larboc@hotmail.com 11-21-2006, 08:49 AM 1300 SCOUT!!! AHHAHAaa, I fucked up. -10 points from me. I meant IH 1300 pickup.
Just checking the specs on the rotery gurder and... i'm retarded.
larboc@hotmail.com 11-21-2006, 03:33 PM bought it. high pinion dana 60 4.10 for $450 including bolts delivered to my trailer. :flipoff2:
BLK Scout 800 11-21-2006, 04:00 PM That seems very cheep!!!! Did you pull the sterling rear that matched? From what I've seen they are plenty strong and have good aftermarket support..
Good find :smokin:
larboc@hotmail.com 11-21-2006, 04:17 PM No I didn't, the yard wants about the same price for all axles and I would rather have a shaved disk 14bolt under there. I'll wait for a $100 14-bolt to come along and shave and disk it over the winter.
I am getting close to deciding on a ford460/C6/np205 powertrain so i want to have at least SOMETHING chevy under there.
Already have a running 460 from a mercury and there is a 1979 ford f150 in another nearby junkyard. Hopefully it will have a left drop np205 and C6. Has HP d44 up front for 150 bucks so I may pick that up and ebay it while I am there.
BLK Scout 800 11-21-2006, 04:45 PM This may be a dumb question but are chevy/ford 8 lug the same??
reuben 11-21-2006, 05:33 PM up till the new fords went to a metric bolt pattern.
larboc@hotmail.com 11-22-2006, 12:19 AM up till the new fords went to a metric bolt pattern.
Yea, same 8 on 6.5 as chevs. It may have a metric lug thread but I can deal with that.
472Scout 11-22-2006, 01:11 AM You did good. :)
I would plan on running coil springs with that '88 HP60. If you run leaf springs you'll have clearance issues.
When you get your 14 bolt make sure you get the 67" version. Not the cab and chassis.
larboc@hotmail.com 11-22-2006, 07:55 AM I was seriously considering getting a C&C 14 bolt and putting the srw hubs on it so I would have the bigger axle tubes. No real reason except that a friend of mine has the regular shaved and disked srw 14-bolt under his heep and I want to outdo him.
but I prolly won't.
coils huh. With a radius arm setup or 4-link?
james west 11-22-2006, 12:55 PM 4 LINK
...............duh:beer:
472Scout 11-22-2006, 06:07 PM If you use the C&C with SRW hubs you'll have spacing problems with the bolt-on disc brake kits as the backing plate mounting flange is farther inboard. I would use the weld on brackets.
I wouldn't do a 4 link unless you plan on full hydro steering.
If you go by the junkyard with the TH400/205 adapter grab it for me. :)
bassdude 11-22-2006, 06:29 PM No I didn't, the yard wants about the same price for all axles and I would rather have a shaved disk 14bolt under there. I'll wait for a $100 14-bolt to come along and shave and disk it over the winter.

whay fuck up a good thing?
larboc@hotmail.com 11-22-2006, 06:57 PM Finally went by and picked it up. We'll call it my thanksgiving kill. everything went as planned.
I didn't know that about the bolt on disk conversions for my c&c plan not working. I'll stick with the srw 14 bolt setup. My heep friend of mine converted his with a bolt on plate kit he got from somebody on pirate and it was a really nice looking bolt on operation using carquest parts.
The spring pad spacing is so friggin wide on this 88 that I will have to do some serious fabbing either way I go. The 4-link would be baller. I'll have to think about it. Time to warm up the ol search button. I don't like the trac bar idea so triagulated would be best if I have the clearence.
If I stick with leafs, I am going to have to make a jungle gym to move the mounts out. I do like the simplicity of leafs and it would be ALOT cheaper/easier/faster.
Would the steering angles just be too extreme for even a hydro assist setup with 4 link?
472Scout 11-23-2006, 04:55 AM The problem you run into with a 4 link and crossover steering is binding. If you go leaf springs don't say I didn't warn you about the clearance. :)
nooblet 11-23-2006, 02:50 PM Nice score.
