: Hand throttle

I'm thinking it may be handy [pun intended :flipoff2: ] to have a hand throttle for winching and heavy use of the air compressor. I've seen them on defenders before (its been a while), but not on a disco or RRC. Anyone here have one? Details? What did you use?

I'm thinking a bicycle shifter and a cable would probably work, but a stepper motor and a rheostat may be more elegant? Any ideas, pics? Thanks.

I'm going to use a mtn. bike shifter and a choke cable with the shifter mounted on the stick, 8 clicks, should be perfect.

This is what I'm using. :smokin:

I've got a couple of the exMil throttle cables like in Jeff's photo. They are surplus items that I yanked out of some 5-tons that were getting scrapped, so they are not as purdy. Shoot me a PM if you want one.

Thanks guys. aloharover, thanks for the offer. I have to think about it. that throttle cable may be a little butch for what I'm doing. A bike gear shifter sounds cool, I'm just not sure where to put it. I don't want to strap it to the AT shifter. That's why I pondered a stepper motor before, but then again that's a bit complex.

How about tapping into the IAC wiring? danger of it backfeeding into the ECU and frying it? what do you guys think? PT?

Isolating it from the ECU shouldn't be an issue, use a diode. Stepper motor controllers are abundant and shouldn't be difficult to find one even in kit form. Coil resistance is about 60 ohms and the numberof steps available should be easy to find in the FSM or ETM.

I recently drove a 90 with a bicycle shifter on the shift lever. Stupid simple.

Wow! It sure must have been nice to have "cruise control" in a Defender ;)

Vernier control cable is the best thing for this. Available at any industrial supply shop. I have a genuine hand throttle and they are crap.

Like the on at the top of this page (http://www.glendinningprods.com/pdfs/nw_vernier_utility_cables.pdf)

Turn to finely adjust the throttle, pull for coarse adjustments, and punch the button to turn it off.

That looks pretty good. I wonder how flexible the cables are...

I was afraid to use it as such.

There are all sorts of brands, so it depends what you get. Normally they are similar to a throttle cable. They run around $40 Canadian when I've looked. The only downside is the solid straight portion is fairly long, so maounting can be challenging.

OTOH, is it even a good idea to play with the IAC like that? If you open it up, bypassing the ECU, wouldn't that make the engine run lean?

The ECU would still add fuel due to the oxygen sensors recognizing the lean condition. You DO still have the front sensors don't you???

The function of the IAC circuit is to maintain idle under varying loads, like the A/C compressor, or in your case, increased current demand from the alternator, or running the compressor.

I have all four sensors. The downstream sensors are only for show, of course.

I'll have to ponder this one for a while...Thanks for the insight..

It's worth what it cost:flipoff2:

I finally got around to doing this, so I thought I would share. Sorry for the lame tech, but it is cheap. :flipoff2:

It was super easy since I have no use for cruise control and no hood release cable (got tired of the hood jamming so I put in some pins). Everything just kind of fit.

Control cable from pep boys ($12) and a couple of shaft collars from the hardware store ($2 each) is all it took.

If you're quick on UK eBay is a genuine hand throttle (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Hand-Throttle-Control-from-300TDI-Defender-Land-Rover_W0QQitemZ330130028750QQihZ014QQcategoryZ3134 8QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) for not much money.

PM me if you want me to get it for ya and mail it over.

Thanks, but I've spent the last few years removing genuine parts from this thing... :flipoff2:

Alex, I've been running a hand throttle for years on my Disco - thought I had posted to this thread when you first started it, but I guess not...

I thought the IC-706 had a menu controllable function for engine speed. That must only be found on the newer MK II G models:flipoff2:

(Perhaps you could use something like keyer speed to control the IAC)

That pic was shot a looong time ago, my friend - nowdays the POS is lucky to keep running all the way to the post office and back.

If it didn't have a future rendezvous with a plasma cutter, I'd use it as a RTI fixture for the Mog.

PT - no, the 706 is used to monitor ignition noise, so I know when the engine quits...
