Hy guy's,

I'am getting interested in a hydro assist steering on my 2003 D-90 Td5.

So, what do you recommend ??
Full hydro or an extra assist ont the original power steering ??

For this time I run on 35, may be in future 36 or 37............

Any tips, links, prives etc.
Forsure, mention what not to buy !!!

Thanks, guy's,
Ced

Hey Ced,

I'd definitely suggest hydro ASSIST, and not full hydro...

IIRC, the TD5 power steering pump is better than the old V8 one, so I think all you really need to do is by a 1.5-2" diameter single ended ram from any of the good vendors here (Rockstomper is where I got mine), tap your power steering BOX (really simple, there was a write up here that helped, I have some pics if you want me to email them to you) and mount the ram with two hoses and you are done. FYI, I installed my ram in the stock Defender steering dampner location, however, it is recommeded that the ram be parallel to the steering arms.

hy,

I would be nice to get your pictures.
Do you have type (Sn°) nr of your rockstomper ??

Thanks,
Ced

Do a search here for Ram assist. I did a thread with some pics of my setup. Keith tapped the steering box.

Hi All,

I have resurrected an old thread rather than starting a new one.

I am running a 2001 D90 on 35x13.5” Bfg Krawlers. The drive train is pretty solid now with Keith’s axle and CV kit, and MaxiDrive rears, but now I am pushing it a bit harder my feeble geek arms are struggling to steer it in the bigger rocks.

Coupled with that I don’t really want to force it too much and risk the PSB so I am looking at fitting Hydro Assist.

With our rules over here I will probably end up having to disable it for road use. (Will read the rules soon) but ignoring that I have some questions.

After reading up it would seem that drilling and tapping the PSB isn’t too hard (although a diagram would be great if anyone has one) and a 1.75” Ram would be a reasonable option for both road and wheeling. My questions are relating to which way to push.

Here is a picture. I can either fit it where the steering damper is pushing onto the forged piece where the TRE goes in, or set it up pushing the other way where I have my advanced CAD skills showing in red lines :p

Any advantages or disadvantages of either? Hose lengths was one.

I wont be using that draglink either I have a MaxiDrive one in the garage I just haven’t fitted it yet.

Finally what is a good Ram nowdays?

Thanks all.

Ps I know its wrong hand drive.

Running the ram directly on the axle to the knuckle takes a lot of strain off the draglink. put it on the knuckle without the draglink. the draglink steers one tyre and the ram steers the other reducing the strain on the draglink by half. This seems to be the way 95 percent of people do it.

Cheers for that BBT, I did think about doing that but it will be a pretty tight fit!

Do you have any pictures?

Edited to add. Where do they mount the RAM? On the axle housing?

It's not just you. Waiting for pictures of the 95% of people who do it that way.

One end on the axle housing, other end on the tierod or steering knuckle.
