How many gallons of Durabak/Herculiner/etc. do you guys think it would take to do the outside (body and top) of my '71 Scout II? Has anyone done it that can give me a good estimate so I can figure out a budget? Also, how happy have you been with it on the outside of your vehicle? How has it held up UV (fade) wise?

I already have Herculined the inside floor and I like the idea of the ruggedness and easy cleanup along with the no nonsense look. I'm thinking that applying it on the outside of a truck that goes offroad quite a bit will save a lot of scratches and what not. I'm constantly having to touch up my Krylon rattle can paint job. Maybe this will be a rugged and cheaper alternative than a real paintjob?

So what do you guys think? As always, any and all help and/or suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks very much in advance.:)

Eidted to add: Who's got the best price on Durabak or Herculiner? I've looked around on the interweb and about $80 per gallon is the best so far. Anybody cheaper? Thanks again.

I think if you want it to look like anything but shit... forget the roller and invest in a Shootz gun so you can spray it on.

i used the bondo brand lining stuff at advance was like 50 to 60 bucks a gallon. did the inside and firewall and lower half of scout 2 with like a gallon and 1/3. my opinion would not do the whole truck my friend did his cj using the roller and it looks like crap but then again he did lay it on pretty thick.

The previous owner rolled the interior and rockers on mine and it looks pretty good. I rattle canned the outside O.D. Green and it's not holding up the way I had hoped and am looking for something a little more durable.

I guess what I'm saying is I don't want to invest in a good gun because I'll (fingers crossed) never have to use it again (and I don't have a compressor). I'd like to do it on the cheap and with the good results on the inside and rockers, it seems like a good alternative.

Thanks for the advice though. Anyone else have any opinions or know how many gallons for the outside? Thanks again.:D

You can pick up one of the Tiwain or Chinese guns for like $20. Plenty good enough for a "every once in a while" type job.

Pardon my ignorance, but I though spray guns were MUCH more expensive. Thanks for the tip, I'll check into getting a cheap gun and spraying it.

Anyone else with any idea of how many gallons of Herculiner or Durabak will do the outside?

Thanks a lot pal.:flipoff2:

If anyone else is wondering the same thing, a guy who's done a bunch of Scouts over on the Binder Bulletin says two gallons should be enough to do the outside.

Also, check out this red color herculiner...

It's a little more flashy than I thought I would like and a big change from this...

That is a really clean looking 800. I would keep that as a daily driver with paint and find a beater to wheel. Just my .02

For the record, that's not my 800. It was done for a customer by a guy in Canada who does a lot of Herculiner jobs. And I agree with you, that is a really clean 800.

I posted the pic for the color. I'd never seen the red Herc and was surprised how good it looked. I had considered doing my Scout II in black Herc and then laying some Krylon back on top to keep the same color scheme I already have. But, that red looks so good it may have changed my mind. Maybe red with a white top (Herculiner comes in white as well).

Oh, and to the guys advocating spraying the liner, the red was put on totally with a brush and used two coats. So maybe I don't need a gun after all. We'll see.

Is that a fiberglass tub. Almost looks too clean to be steel.

I'm sure you all are going to blast me for this, but take a look at POR 15. I've used it on two Scouts and a Dodge and it worked great. I've done some restoration and rebuilds with it also. It can be thinned and shot and works pretty damn good. :smokin:
