I Bench welded up a friends dana 44 open carrier and now his buddy wants it done to his xj 8 1/4 rear . I have heard some vodoo stories about how i shouldnt take the carrier out of the xj.

Should I just weld it up in the diff housing? Or are they feeding me a line of BS?

it really depends on what he runs and how he drives. Most of the time the carrier breaks, but then again the D44 is a bit bigger and can probably handle the stress better. The reason they say not to take it out is because it is a VERY TIGHT fit, and you may not get the gear in the same was, so it would throw off the pinion depth and backlash.
