Can you id these?
It has a AMC V8 motor with a " 290 " embossed in the block at each motor mount location
It has a 4 speed swapped in with the following ID #'s
Tag attached to the passenger side has
5359389 RGDE26 or 8
1198
Cast on the driver side of trans is
C26049
The D300 looks like its attached to a " texas " pattern adapter
Thanks for any help.
Yea I searched last night!
That would be an AMC v8, 290 cid - a precursor to the 304
Not sure of the tranny
You sure that's a dana 300 and not a 20?

is the tranny cast iron or aluminum?
the adapter that bolts between a T-176 and a D300 kinda looks like a texas pattern...but its not. my guess is a T-176. matt

So all we have left to ID 100% is the trans.
It measures 10" in length and is aluminum cased.
Thanks for the help so far for ID,ing the rest of the drive train.

highlander,
You have a T170 FT series trans. It's a 1980-1984 Tremec with one of the following ratios:
T176- 3.52/2.27/1.46/1.00/3.52R
T177-3.82/2.29/1.46/1.00/3.82R
T178-3.01/2.08/1.47/1.00/3.01R
AMC and Jeep used these. The last one above was seen in autos. I've never seen that ratio in a Jeep. Maybe the 290 and car trans was swapped from an AMC car though.
"Top loaded transmission with tower shift, sandcast aluminum case and diecast aluminum cover. Case and cover castings #C2604xxx. Synchronized on all forward gears with sliding gear reverse incorporated in the 1st/2nd synchronizer clutch. May be familiar to customers as the Ford 'RUG' transmission (but with different ratios)." or.......
Ford used this 'RUG' transmission (with a cast iron case) from 1964-78. commonly referred to as the Ford 'Top loader'. Two distinct versions, the '64-73 direct drive, and the 1977-78 overdrive, are covered. Externally similar, they may be distinguished by the Ford-style casting numbers on the direct drive, and Tremec (#260xxxx) castings on the overdrive models.
1979-83 Tremec 170FS (RUG) aretop loaded overrdrive transmissions with single-rail shift and extension mounted turret for the floor lever. Aluminum case with #260xxxx casting. Designed with an enclosed shifter to reduce shift problems, the enclosed design eliminates the option of using aftermarket shifters.
1964-73 Tremec 170F (RUG) 2.32/1.69/1.29/1.00/2.32R
2.78/1.93/1.36/1.00/2.78R T170F
1977-78 Tremec 170F (RUG) 3.29/1.84/1.00/0.81/3.29R T171F
1979-83 Tremec 170FS(RUG) 3.29/1.84/1.00/0.81/3.29R T171FS
3.07/1.72/1.00/0.70/3.07R T174FS
You have one of the above. 8<)
regards, as always, jefe
