I have been looking for a flattie to transfer my 83 toyota SB to since my frame is just about rusted out. I could probably fix it but I have always loved the look of the old flat fender jeeps.
What I have now is an 83 toy SB, with a 96 tpi 4.3, 4L60e, howell wiring harnes, stock toy transfer, 88 4 runner rear. Since the toy drive line is fairly strong I am considering keeping it. On the other hand I could sell the truck with the adapters minus the engine and trans since the straight axle is a well sought after platform for mild wheeling and let some one else fix the frame.
If I go the route using the toy driveline what are some of the major issues I will run into or would it be more economical to another driveline?
Contact I Lean on here he did something like that years ago, though I think he used a 22r or something, it was a all toyota drivetrain anyway. I rode with him in Moab once and it was pretty cool. He had the electric lockers Front and Rear I believe in his.
Honestly I'd be looking for just a flattie body and you might be better off getting an aftermarket one, you can't get an aftermarket grill though. As far as the frame you'd be way ahead to build your own of get AFW or the like to build you one.

The toy driveline has been done in a few flattys such as-

Definately build or buy a new frame. The old one just takes too much time to reinforce and you are still left with an old frame that could still crack.

Plus the old frame is not long enough to get a decent wheelbase. You can actually build a replacement frame faster than you can build plates and weld them onto the old frame.
DO IT! Toyota parts will work well in a light weight rig.

I am actually in the process of a willys/toyota build. I have a 3A that I have stretched 10 inches in the middle of the frame, I should have boxed it but I am at school so I havent reall had any time to work on it. I am running a 22R with the toyota tcase and tranny, along with the toyota axles sprung over on YJ leaves in the frint and XJ leaves in the back. I have made all my own hangers and mounts and ended up outboarding the springs front and rear about an inch on each side. With the stretch from the frame and the springs the rear driveshaft is still only going to be around 18-20 inches long which concerns me a little.

I think that would be an awsome set up. Nice and light. Like mentioned previously, make or purchase a new frame. I made my own and stretched the tub 12". Well, well worth it!
Good luck wit your build up and keep us posted.

Steve, my rear shaft is only 20" FTR.
