Anyone think of using one of these as a base for a crawler. Cage, frame, etc all set up. everyone is talking about minimalist set ups, drop in a drivetrain and fiddle with the axle mounts and off you go. Thought I would throw it out there for comment, but it is not something I am really considering.

Dumb idea or no?

I have seen 100in set ups as well and I was particularly keen on the flat pack package (ie prebent tube ready to weld)

A couple of friends of mine (I'll leave them nameless!) were seriously considering buying a Bowler WildCat chassis...Nice designs for high speed stuff, but for crawling, IMO, the chassis would require a LOT of re-work to fit what *we* need as a basis for serious rock crawling. These guy's were gonna' buy a couple too...Until they talked with the owner of Bowler and he's only doing turn-key rigs now...Got too popular with the Paris Dakar crowd, and he's doing very well...He had no need to have some Yank bastardize his chassis design!

building something like that with all late model parts would be really cool

for that mater getting a smacked or rolled insuraunce sign off and adapting the frame similar to that one and then bending up a aluminum body alla stock car style to sorta look like a defender would make a cool crawler.

with the huge reduction in weight the drivline may need less upgrades

They are based on RR/disco chassis

which generally are given away or are almost free.

Doug's point is good but what I was thinking was just using the body/frame/cage up and fabbing whatever mounts you wanted to the chassis.

Not my gig just throwin it out there.
