I have an engine in my bus, its one or the other cause thats what exaust gaskets I needed, but there are no identifying tags anywhere on the vehicle, is there and easy way to tell them apart?

266 and 304 use the same exhaust gaskets..

Best way to tell? Look at the engine ID tag on the passenger side, near the front, just under the head, just above the fuel pump.

There's a little "boss" with stamped numbers on it there.. use some Brake-cleaner, a wire brush, rag, screwdriver, whatever..

(EDIT: It didn't show the pics from BB so I took off the formatting and just left the links to the pictures.)

Like Tom said, all the SV series engines use the same exhaust gaskets.

Here's the boss he was talking about. This is on the front of the engine, on the passenger side bank of cylinders.

Another way to tell is to measure across the valley pan. Shown below is a 304, at about 7" across. 345/392 engines are closer to 8" on this measurement.

It's there, perhaps under allot of grease, and nope it absense dosn't make it a 392.

I got a call the other day from a friend who said there was an old IH down at the junkyard with a monsterous big block in it. So I went down there a few days later and opened the hood. It was a '62 dump truck. Oh yeah.... it's an SV alright. I got to work with a screwdriver and scraped the little pad clean, wiped it with a rag and what do you think I saw.... damn, it's a V266. My buddy (non-IH guy) didn't hardly believe me that it was only a 266. He was sure it had to be bigger than that. Numbers don't lie....... and niether does the ID pad. It's there, it's on all of them.

Hmm, you learn something new everyday.....I always used the old flip a coin method. Flip it and let it land on the air-filter; heads up its a 345, tails its a 392:flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2:
